Suzuki has just unveiled the all-new e SKY, an electric kei car that’s set to compete with the BYD Racco, Honda N-One e:, and Nissan Sakura in Japan.

The eSKY uses an in-house developed eAxle, Suzuki’s dedicated “Heartect-E” electric vehicle platform, and an LFP battery supplied by a BYD-affiliated manufacturer.

Incorporating Suzuki’s philosophy of “Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi” (Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty), the e SKY is claimed to have a driving range of 310 kilometers and a class-leading energy consumption rate (AC) of 97 Wh/km (WLTC).

A minimum turning radius of 4.4 meters also lets it maneuver easily in tight streets.

The e SKY will be priced aggressively in Japan with an expected price of a Y2.12 million (around P840,000) before government subsidies; lower than the BYD Racco. If government subsidies for Suzuki’s e-Every kei commercial EV are applied to the e SKY, then it could be priced at low as Y1.55 million (approximately P614,905).

By comparison, the BYD Racco starts at Y2.14 million (approximately P848,966) with a range of 210km for its entry level variant.

While EV adoption rates in Japan are far below the average for the region owing to the surge in demand for ‘new energy vehicles’, the eSky could serve as a test case for Suzuki before it decides to produce a left-hand drive version for other markets.
