Turn in the Road Safely
The turn in the road—often referred to as a three-point turn—is an essential low-speed driving manuover designed to turn your vehicle around in a narrow street. Executing it safely requires exceptional clutch control, smooth steering, and rigorous 360-degree observations throughout every stage.
# # # 1. Positioning and Initial Move
Before starting, ensure that the chosen location is safe, legal, and wide enough for the maneuver.
* **Choose a safe and legal location:** Verify there are no parking restrictions, blind bends, junctions, or double white lines nearby. Look all around, check for traffic, and observe pedestrians on both pavements.
* **First forward movement:** Move off slowly using steady clutch control while steering briskly to the right. Observe approaching traffic and pedestrians continuously, then stop before reaching the opposite kerb without mounting or touching it.
# # # 2. Reverse Phase and Critical Checks
Reversing across the carriageway is the most vulnerable portion of the turn, demanding maximum vigilance.
* **Prepare to reverse:** Secure the car, select reverse gear, and perform a full all-around observation—this is a critical check. Scan all mirrors and blind spots; stop immediately if you are obstructed or unsure of other road users.
* **Reverse movement:** Back up very slowly using clutch control while steering quickly to the left. Keep scanning all around continuously, stopping well before the kerb behind you.

Once the car is positioned diagonally to complete the turn, bring the vehicle back into the correct lane.
* **Straighten wheels:** Align your steering wheel as you complete the final forward movement.
* **Select first gear and observe:** Check your interior and exterior mirrors, alongside your blind spots, before setting off.
* **Move off safely:** Rejoin the normal flow of traffic smoothly when clear.
Always remember that safer alternatives—such as driving around a block or using an upcoming roundabout—should be used whenever available. Avoid turning on busy main roads or areas where visibility is compromised.
