The Toyota Celica ST205 GT-Four—a WRC legend and a nightmare for rearview mirrors. Built to dominate night stages, this AWD turbo beast didn’t just light up the road—it blinded anything in front of it.
The Real WRC Celica: Toyota’s Banned Beast
The Celica GT-Four (ST205) was Toyota’s ultimate rally weapon in the mid-'90s, competing under Toyota Team Europe (TTE). With its turbocharged 3S-GTE engine, AWD, and advanced aerodynamics, it was designed to take on the WRC giants. But in 1995, Toyota was caught using an ingeniously hidden illegal turbo restrictor, leading to one of the biggest scandals in WRC history. FIA banned the Celica and suspended Toyota from the championship for a year.
WRC & Rally: The Evolution of Speed
Rally racing has always been about real roads, real danger, real skill. It started in the early 1900s, but WRC (World Rally Championship) officially began in 1973. The sport’s golden era was Group B (1982-1986), where manufacturers pushed the limits of speed and danger—until it was deemed too deadly and was banned. Group A followed, producing icons like the Celica GT-Four, Subaru WRX, and Mitsubishi Evo. Today, Toyota continues its rally legacy with the GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid.
The Celica’s Legacy
Despite the WRC ban, the Celica won titles and became a cult classic. Its AWD-turbo formula set the stage for Toyota’s later rally champions like the Corolla WRC and GR Yaris. The ST205 remains an icon—a reminder that Toyota was willing to do anything to win.
