In 2016, a gas station in Russia tried to pull off what it thought would be a clever marketing stunt: show up in a bikini, get a free full tank of fuel. The idea seemed simple enough—attract attention, maybe bring in a few curious customers, and get people talking.
Oh, people talked all right.
The promotion didn’t technically say the bikini had to be worn by women. And the internet, as we all know, has a very literal sense of humor.
Soon enough, dozens of men started arriving at the station proudly wearing bikinis. Some went the extra mile—literally strutting in high heels, striking poses, and making sure they followed the rules to the letter. If there were points for commitment, these guys would have filled several tanks.
Before long, crowds gathered, phones came out, and the fuel line stretched down the street as more bikini-clad participants joined the unexpected fashion show. What was meant to be a simple promo had turned into something closer to a beach party… at a gas station.
After about three chaotic hours, the station finally shut the promotion down. Apparently, giving away free fuel to an army of determined dads and dudes wasn’t part of the original business plan.
Lesson learned: when you write promotional rules, be very specific. Because we all know someone who will do anything for free fuel.
