The cat is out of the bag for Geely’s refreshed EX5. Thanks to recent regulatory filings, we now have a clear look at the updated electric SUV just days before its official September 21 launch in China. While it might look familiar at a glance, Geely has quietly re-engineered this compact crossover from the ground up, turning what used to be a sensible commuter car into a much faster, smarter machine.

Geely ditched the old front-wheel-drive setup entirely, moving the electric motor to the back axle to create a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout. It’s not just a change in posture, either—the new motor puts out a hefty 245 kW (329 hp), a massive 114-horsepower jump over the previous model. That extra muscle bumps the top speed up to 201 km/h. As a bonus, clearing out the mechanical bits under the hood opened up enough room for a spacious front trunk (frunk) that can handle up to 50 kg of luggage.

The sleek, flush door handles of the previous global version are gone, replaced by semi-hidden, traditional handles to meet China's updated safety rules. More importantly, there is a distinct LiDAR pod sitting right above the windshield. Combined with new cameras tucked into the front fenders and rear spoiler, this hardware upgrade gives the EX5 a high-end Level 2+ driving suite, allowing the SUV to handle highway and city navigation with minimal driver intervention.
