What maintenance do EVs actually need if there are no oil changes?
Even without oil changes, EVs still need regular maintenance. The difference is they have far fewer moving parts, so maintenance is generally simpler, less frequent, and less expensive.
Typical EV maintenance includes:
- Tire rotation, balancing, and wheel alignment. EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, so proper tire care is important.
- Brake inspections and brake fluid replacement. Regenerative braking reduces brake wear, but the braking system still needs regular checks.
- Cabin air filter replacement to keep the air inside the vehicle clean.
- Windshield washer fluid refills and wiper blade replacement.
- Coolant inspection or replacement on models with liquid-cooled batteries and power electronics, following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.
- 12-volt battery testing and replacement when needed. Newer EVs use improved battery chemistry, and some models with LFP batteries can last 10 years or more.
- Suspension, steering, and drivetrain inspections.
- Software updates that improve performance, efficiency, features, or fix bugs.
What EVs don't need are engine oil changes, oil filters, spark plugs, timing belts, fuel filters, exhaust system repairs, and many other maintenance items required by gasoline-powered cars. If you drive a PHEV, you'll still need some of these services because it has a gasoline engine.
In short, EV maintenance focuses on tires, brakes, fluids, filters, inspections, and software, rather than maintaining a combustion engine.
