IS THE GROWTH OF SUV SIZE MAKING BLIND SPOTS LARGER THAN OUR CHILDREN CAN SURVIVE?

A devastating example of this phenomenon happened in Barangay Bambang, Pasig City, when an SUV killed a 4-year-old child. Law enforcement is currently investigating, but we should consider the implications of larger vehicles on the safety of residential neighborhoods where children live, play, and use as free space.

Larger SUVs create larger blind zones, and, as such, there are active blind zones in front of the vehicle where smaller children can be, and the driver may not be able to see them. This is not a problem of distraction or improper behavior of the driver. If a 4-year-old can be hidden in a blind zone of a vehicle, the design of the vehicle is also hazardous and needs to be considered.

At what point do we stop thinking about how large SUVs protect the occupants of the vehicle and consider how they endanger everyone else?
