Engine Oil Color Guide – What Your Dipstick Is Telling You
Checking your dipstick is one of the easiest ways to monitor engine health. The color and texture of engine oil reveal important information about its condition.
🟡 Light Yellow / Clear – This is new oil. It is clean and provides proper lubrication. No action needed.
🟠 Amber – Oil is still in good condition. It has started collecting minor contaminants but is safe to use.
🟤 Dark Brown – Oil is aging. It is losing efficiency and should be changed soon along with the oil filter.
⚫ Black – Oil is dirty and filled with carbon deposits. Immediate oil and filter change recommended.
⚪ Milky / Creamy – This is dangerous. It usually indicates coolant mixing with oil due to a head gasket failure or internal engine damage. Immediate inspection is required.
Regular oil checks prevent major engine damage. Always check oil level and condition when the engine is cool and parked on a flat surface.
