FAW Toyota, Toyota's primary joint venture in China, has officially launched the refreshed 2027 bZ5 all-electric coupe SUV. Serving as a pivotal vehicle in Toyota's aggressive strategy to reclaim market share from aggressive domestic EV competitors, this first-year annual update sharpens the model's high-tech edge. Originally debuting as a bold "made-in-China-for-China" product, the bZ5 series directly undercuts Western and domestic alternatives like the Tesla Model Y, blending traditional Toyota quality with localized, cutting-edge technology.
The core focus of the 2027 update centers around enhanced autonomous capabilities and smart driving assistance. The top-tier variants benefit from an upgraded Toyota Pilot intelligent driving system, combining Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) with the locally optimized Momenta 5.0 urban assisted driving software. Operating on a dense network of 33 hardware sensorsโincluding roof-mounted LiDAR, ultrasonic radars, and high-definition camerasโthe system delivers highly precise automated parking, remote parking, and comprehensive navigation-assisted autopilot for both congested urban environments and highways.
FAW Toyota continues its strategic powertrain partnership with Chinese EV giant BYD. The 2027 bZ5 utilizes a front-mounted single electric motor pushing out a robust 200 kW (268 horsepower), fueled by BYD's famously durable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade batteries. Drivers can choose between two refined battery capacities: a standard 65.28-kWh pack capable of a 550 km range, and an extended-range 73.98-kWh pack pushing limits up to 630 km under CLTC standards. Supported by reliable fast charging, the updated bZ5 remains exceptionally competitive, starting at a highly accessible base price of 129,800 yuan (approximately PhP 1.189 million).
