Meet the females of six hummingbird species from the Amazon!
🇵🇪 Cuando empezé la fotografía de aves me quedé sorprendida como en algunas especies, la hembra y el macho son practicamente iguales; y en en otras especies, la variación en la fisionomía externa es enorme. Con esto en mente, me es grato presentarles una selección de seis hembras de colibrís de la Amazonía, que tienen variación en la fisionomía externa con los machos de la misma especie.

Comento tambien que en Octubre 2019, salió un artículo en Audubon.org titulado “Los Principales Museos de Historia Natural del Mundo Tienen un Sesgo a favor de Aves Macho." El artículo dice: “Las aves hembra suelen intentar evitar atención de otro tipo: de depredadores que buscan robar huevos indefensos o pichones del nido. Como resultados, el colorido de las hembras es frecuentemente-pero no simpre-apagado o críptico. Intentan esconderse, y como resultado se esconden de los científicos, tambien.” ¡Y de los fotógrafos agregaría yo! Entonces, con mayor motivo les presento estas seis hembras de colibrí de la Amazonía, ¡es hora de conocerlas!
🇺🇸 When I started bird photography I was really surprised to find how in some species, the female and the male are very similar; and in others, they are entirely different with huge variations in the external physiognomy. With this in mind, it occurred to me to prepare this blog post. It is my pleasure to present a selection of females of six species of hummingbirds from the Amazon, that have a huge external variation with the males of the same species.
Note, in October 2019, Audubon.org posted an article titled “The World’s Top Natural History Museums Have a Male Bird Bias.” The article states: “Female birds are often trying to avoid attention of a different sort: from predators eager to sn**ch defenseless eggs or chicks from the nest. As a result, female coloring is often—but not always—muted or cryptic. They’re trying to hide, and as a result they hide from scientists, too.” And from photographers I would add! More the reason to introduce these six female hummingbirds from the Amazon, it’s time to shine the light on them!

Aves en el Borde del Bosque / Birds on the Forest Edge
🇵🇪 Hoy, Moyobamba es conocida como “La Ciudad de las Orquídeas” y es la capital de la región San Martín, en el noreste del Perú. Su ubicación es estratégica por estar como sobre una repisa en las faldas de la Cordillera de los Andes, que da a la Amazonía. Es un punto natural de entrada a la selva. El crecimiendo urbano empuja el borde del bosque más adentro y la deforestación avanza rápido. Ambos son amenazas a la biodiversidad de Moyobamba, incluyendo a las aves. Las aves incluidas en esta nota son representativas de aquellas encontradas en el borde de los bosques, otras se han adentrado más en el bosque donde pueden encontrar el hábitat necesario para sobrevivir.

🇺🇸 Today, Moyobamba is known as “The City of Orchids” and is the capital of the region of San Martín, in the north east of Peru. It is strategically located as if on a shelf on the lower altitude of the Andes Mountain Range overlooking the Amazonian rainforest. It is a natural entry point into the rainforest. Urban expansion is pushing the forest edge deeper into the rainforest and deforestation advances quickly. Both are threats to the biodiversity of Moyobamba, including the bird life. The birds presented in this post are those found typically at forest edges, others have fled further into the forest where they may find the type of habitat they require to survive.

🇵🇪 En 1970 durante una expedición científica al Perú, el profesor Ned K. Johnson (1932-2003) de la Universidad de Berkeley, reconocido como un ejemplar biólogo de campo, colectó un par de aves similares a otras conocidas, pero no exactamente iguales. Recién 30 años despues, el profesor y sus colegas, lograron presentarlas como nueva especie, al Espatulilla de Johnson (Poecilotriccus luluae.) Esta ave es una de las 106 aves endémicas del Perú.

🇺🇸 In 1970 during a scientific expedition in Peru, professor Ned K. Johnson (1932-2003) of Berkeley known as the “ultimate field biologist,” collected a couple of birds that were very similar to other known ones, but not quite. It took another 30 years for the professor and his colleagues to present them as a new species, Johnson's Tody-flycatcher (Poecilotriccus luluae.) It is one of the 106 endemic species of Peru.

🇵🇪 El Maravilloso es el Colibrí Cola de Espátula (Loddigesia mirabilis), y es considerado el más bello de todos los colibrís por una cola larga que termina en dos plumas azules y los movimientos que realiza con ellas, especialmete durante el cortejo. Es un verdadero bailarín.
Al 2019, el Perú cuenta con 1861 especies de aves de las cuales, 106 son endémicas del Perú, o sea, solo existen en el Perú. El Maravilloso es una de ellas y existe unicamente en el Valle del Utcubamba en Amazonas. ¡Esperemos poder seguir disfrutando del Maravilloso y de las aves que comparten su hábitat!
🇺🇸 The Marvelous One is the Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis) and is considered the most beautiful of hummingbirds, for its long tail ending in two blue feathers and the way it moves them, especially during courtship. It is a true aerial dancer.
As of 2019, Peru counts with 1861 bird species of which 106 are endemic of Peru, that is, they exist only in Peru. The Marvellous One is one and exists only in the Utcubamba Valley in Amazonas. May we continue to enjoy the presence of the Marvelous One and the birds that share its habitat!

🇵🇪 En Noviembre 2018, hice un viaje a San Martín, el último viaje del año a la selva. El destino principal fue el Fundo Alto Nieva, paraíso para los amantes de la naturaleza, especialmente los pajareros fotógrafos!
Quisiera agradecer la hospitalidad de Carlos Calle, amigo y fundador del Fundo Alto Nieva, y su gran equipo. ¡No queda más que volver a este paraíso para los pajareros y amantes de la naturaleza!

🇺🇸 On November 2018, I travelled to San Martin, on a last trip to the rainforest for the year. The main destination was the Fundo Alto Nieva, a paradise for nature lovers, especially bird photographers!
I would like to thank Carlos Calle, a friend and founder of Fundo Alto Nieva, and his great team. They shared with us their knowledge of birds as well as the richness of Fundo Alto Nieva. Fundo Alto Nieva is a paradise for birders and nature lovers - a place to go back to over and over!

🇵🇪 ¡Lifer en el Parque Nacional Yanachega-Chemillén! ¿Qué es un Lifer? En la terminología pajarera, un Lifer, un sustantivo en inglés, es una especie de ave visto e identificado claramente, por primera vez en la vida, por una persona, en este caso, yo. El Lifer fue el Pájaro Paráguas (Cephalopterus ornatus,) una hembra adulta, que derepente voló a la zona donde nos encontrábamos, y posó sobre una rama, enfrente nuestro. En ese momento guardábamos los equipos para retirarnos del parque. Ya había bajado la luz, nos sentíamos felices por haber disfrutado de un gran show montado por los Gallitos de la Roca (Rupicola peruvianus) y como suele ocurrir, sin esperarlo, nos encontramos con la gran sorpresa de la llegada del Pájaro Paráguas (Cephalopterus ornatus.) Se llama así por la plumas de la cabeza que forman una especie de paraguas sobre la cara del ave. La hembra tiene bastantes plumas paradas en la cabeza, pero no llegan a doblarse como en el caso del macho. ¡Quién sabe la próxima vez logre ver el macho!

🇺🇸 Lifer at the Yanachega-Chemillén Park! What is a Lifer? In birding terms, lifer is a noun in english, and refers to a bird seen and clearly identified, for the first time in a person´s life, in this case, me. The Lifer was an Umbrella Bird (Cephalopterus ornatus,) an adult female, that suddenly flew into the area we were in, and posed right in front of us. We were in the process of wrapping-up the day. The light had gone down, we were ecstatic to have seen a show by a flock of Cock-of the -Rocks (Rupicola peruviana) and as often happens, without expecting it, we were completely astounded by the arrival of the Umbrella Bird (Cephalopterus ornatus.) Its name comes from the feathers on its head that in the case of the male, form a type of umbrella over its face. Maybe next time I´ll get to see the male!

🇵🇪 La Ruta Auvernia, en el Distrito de San Ramón, Provincia de Chanchamayo, Departamento de Junín, fue la primera parada para fotografiar aves en una expedición fotográfica a la Ruta Central de Aves del Perú, realizada en Agosto 2018. Una característica de esta ruta por carretera es que el viaje comienza al nivel del mar y luego sube por el lado occidental de los Andes hasta que cruza el Abra Anticona para luego bajar suavemente hasta la selva.

🇵🇪 Para elaborar esta nota, investigué el origen de la palabra “Auvernia” y detalles sobre la zona. El nombre “Auvernia” es la traducción de Auvergne, una región de Francia. Y en este caso, se refiere a la Hacienda Auvernia, fundada por un inmigrante francés alrededor de 1870. Hoy podemos ver que hay la posibilidad de rescatar espacios, como la Ruta Auvernia, para las aves y el turismo de naturaleza, algo posible por la rica biodiversidad de la zona.

🇺🇸 The Auvernia Trail in the District of San Ramón, Province of Chanchamayo, Department of Junín, was the first stop for birding on a photographic expedition to the Central Birding Route of Peru, in August 2018. One characteristic of this car route is that is begins at sea level in Lima and climbs up and over the Andes, and then gently rolls down into the rainforest.

🇺🇸 As I prepared the blog post, I researched the word “Auvernia” and details about the area. The name “Auvernia” is a translation of Auvergne, a region in France. It was the name given to a farming estate, the Hacienda Auvernia, founded by a french immigrant around 1870. Today we can see the possibility to identify areas, such as the Auvernia Trail, for birds and nature tourism, a possibility thanks to the biodiversity of the area.

🇵🇪 En Mayo 2018, fuí parte de una expedición fotográfica inolvidable al Poblado Flor de Café tambien conocido como el Poblado de Plataforma en la Cordillera Azul de San Martín. Fuimos con dos objetivos de avistamiento de aves: el Barbudo de Franja Escarlata (Capito wallecei) y el "Hormiguero de Plataforma" que aún queda por oficialmente incluirse en la lista de aves del Perú. Mucho por conocer y conservar en aves, mamíferos, flora y paisajes y al mismo tiempo, un mismo patrón en los bosques de selva del Perú: la destrucción del hábitat por el hombre.

🇺🇸 In May 2018, I was part of an unforgettable photographic expedition to the village of Flor de Café, also known as the village of Plataforma in the Cordillera Azul mountain Range of San Martín. We went with two birding objectives in mind: the Scarlet-banded Barbet (Capito wallecei) and the "Plataforma Anteater," a bird that is pending inclusion in the list of birds of Peru. Much to discover and conserve in birds, mammals, flora and landscapes, and at the same, a recurrent theme in the rainforest of Peru: the destruction of habitat by man.

🇵🇪 ¡Les presento la Moscareta de Mishana (Zimmerius villarejoi)! La encontramos en el departamento de San Martín, en el Area de Conservación Regional Cordillera Escalera. Esta es un ejemplo de especie endémica del nor-este del Perú, o sea, que en el mundo, solo se encuentra en esa zona del Perú. ¡Sí, hay que viajar hasta San Martín y Loreto para conocer la Moscareta de Mishana (Zimmerius villarejoi)

🇺🇸 And here is the Mishana Tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi)! We found it in the San Martin department, in northeastern Peru, in the Regional Area of Conservation Cordillera Escalera. It is an example of an endemic species of northeast Peru, in other words, in the whole world, it exists only in this area of Peru. Yes! One does have to travel to San Martín and Loreto to see the Mishana Tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi)!
