Apprentice Engineer (welder/machinist) required!

Are you a hands on person who enjoys working with metal and industrial tools? Do you thrive in small team environments? And does an immediate start in the workshop machining high quality precision parts appeal to you?

If so, the crew at AgLoco® would like to hear from you!

We are a Christchurch based start up on a mission to take the diesel out of food. This year we are flat out constructing our first 150hp advanced steam tractor and we require an up and coming engineer to join our crew. Welding and machining precision parts will be your bread and butter, so you must have an appreciation for hitting tight tolerances, be highly sensitive to surface finish and be ready to learn what good looks like.

Prior experience and a working knowledge of manual lathes, mills, TIG welding and safe workshop practices is useful. At the same time, experience is not necessary and we are happy to bring the right person up to scratch as long as they have a professional attitude and a passion for doing things well.

Candidates will work towards a welding certification if they don’t already have one. After a trial period you will be employed on a full time contract at $25 per hour.

Is this you, or somebody that you know? If so, contact the AgLoco® crew with your CV today!

AgLoco and the global steam community mourn the sudden and unexpected loss of Ing. Shaun T. Mc Mahon. Shaun was highly respected for his skills as a mechanical engineer, his guidance as a leader and for his tireless efforts to preserve and promote the continued use of advanced steam technology. Over the past four years Shaun has been a wholehearted and committed advisor to AgLoco and a close friend and valued mentor of Sam Mackwell, our Chief Mechanical Engineer. Shaun and Sam spent countless hours in video calls covering all aspects of advanced steam design and its practical implementation.

Sam was thirteen years old and researching advanced steam locomotives when he first encountered Shaun’s work, however Shaun’s long career in this field began much earlier. In fact it was in 1994 and coincidentally the same year Sam was born that the young Welshman, then an aspiring mechanical engineer, made his first expatriation halfway across the world to follow an emerging interest in advanced steam technology. With nine years of experience working on local steam railways, Shaun left his homeland for South Africa accepting the role of Assistant Mechanical Engineer on the Alfred County Railway (ACR). There, his passion and prolific research into advanced steam continued and he soon began regular communication with the highly esteemed Ing. Livio Dante Porta. Through written correspondence the two developed a close working relationship and they soon became great friends sharing a passion to master the intricacies and secrets of advanced steam design.

Progressing the design and implementation of advanced steam technology became a life's calling for Shaun and in 1998 he emigrated again to Argentina to continue his work as a technical manager for the railway development company Tranex Turismo S.A. This move allowed Shaun to both progress his career in railways and further his collaborative efforts with Porta to improve advanced steam technology. Their development of a modern internal boiler water chemical treatment for advanced steam engines is the best system available in the world today. Shaun also successfully led advanced steam projects in Argentina for the TransOceanic Railway Project and the management of railway engineering departments and development projects for Tranex Turismo S.A. In 2009, Shaun began what was to be his final role, heading modern steam development at INTI, Argentina’s National Institute of Industrial Technology, where he ensured the continuation and progression of Porta’s work on advanced steam technology.

Here at AgLoco, we greatly admire the engineering achievements of Shaun Mc Mahon. We were honoured to have Shaun as a key advisor and we were proud of the direct link he provided to the work and knowledge of Porta. Unfortunately, Sam had yet to meet Shaun in person. Sam planned to do so later this year at the event Shaun was organising, in Argentina, to commemorate 100 years of Porta’s life. This would have been an amazing opportunity for Sam to meet his friend for the first time and further discuss the potential for advanced steam. Having the steady guidance of such a highly esteemed locomotive mechanical engineer has been instrumental to the early successes of AgLoco. His passing leaves a presence which Sam and the wider AgLoco family will miss immensely. Shaun lived a life full of passion and adventure and his dedication to advanced steam will always be remembered and celebrated.

AgLoco is the embodiment of Ing. Livio Dante Porta's work and now Shaun’s. Unfortunately neither of these men will get to see their vision realised however as we go forward we thank, acknowledge and salute them.

Up and coming mechanical engineering student John has been making great progress working on a variety of precision parts.

Included in these pictures are valve lids, valve guides, piston rod guides/bushes, stuffing box & small check valve guides which John has machined with tolerances as tight as +/- 0.006 mm.

One of the great things about AgLoco®'s boiler technology is that it can all be constructed and assembled by the skilled people we have here in New Zealand.

As we head into production of the first ever AgLoco® 150, we are taking a closer look at the stories of the people who are going to make this dream become a reality.

Our second featured crew member is an international contributor by the name of Darian Oberprantacher. Darian hails from South Tyrol, a beautiful mountainous region in the Italian Dolomites and he has recently completed a Bachelors Degree in Transportation Design at the prestigious European Institute of Design in Turin Italy. We are very excited to have Darian bring his unique skill set, artistic direction and design sensibilities on board, because let's face it; when it comes to design, Italians just do it better.

Darian has been a steam train buff for most of his life and today he recognises the leading role that zero carbon biofuel powered steam engines will play in the future of sustainable transport. As a designer, Darian is able to play an active role in turning his vision into reality and in 2021 he approached AgLoco®’s parent company, Mackwell Locomotive, to collaborate on a concept design for a luxury locomotive passenger rail service. After toiling away for four months his designs were ready to be shared with the world. His work beautifully expressed the bold, sustainable and dynamic products we strive to create and he received full marks from his university (and we are pleased to be able to share some of Darian’s work with you today).

Darian’s work impressed Sam and the AgLoco® crew so much that he was brought on board to provide aesthetic design expertise in all aspects of AgLoco®’s branding and products. Whilst tractors play a practical rather than luxurious role in feeding the world, attention to the aesthetic design is extremely important to create a product that is not only environmentally sustainable, but is emotionally sustainable as well. Darian will be working closely with Sam and our engineers to create fine aesthetic amenity and enhance the overall user experience of the first AgLoco® 150.

Whilst steam engines are currently associated with notions of the past, the incredible improvements made in modern steam engine technology makes them a valuable tool for supporting humanity’s post fossil fuel future. Designing products which essentially change this story and highlight the exceptional growth and progress made in modern steam engines over the past 50 years is crucial for AgLoco®’s growth; because in order to sell a tractor, we must first sell the idea. Darian’s work in aesthetic design will ensure that our customers connect with AgLoco®s on an emotive level, bringing us one step closer to our mission of taking the diesel out of food.

As we head into production of the first ever AgLoco® 150, we are taking a closer look at the stories of the people who are going to make this dream become a reality
- First up is John-Luke Langford, a mechanical engineering student from the University of Canterbury who has come on board as a summer intern at AgLoco®. A fast learner on the lathe and up to date with AgLoco®'s mission to take the diesel out of food - John was a natural fit to join our team in the workshop.

At 19 years old, John is by far the youngest member of the AgLoco® crew. He approached us at the end of his second year of university after seeing an advert on student job search. John came in for a trial where he demonstrated the ability to learn quickly on the job and has stayed onboard ever since. Working closely with our Chief Mechanical Engineer Sam Mackwell; John is making the most of the opportunity to hone his practical skill set and has settled in as an astute hand in the AgLoco® workshop.

John's main responsibility is running the manual lathe to machine high precision parts for the new circulating pump on the 400hp boiler. Sam's feedback is that he is making "excellent progress" and demonstrating remarkable skill in "hitting tight tolerances". John grew up in an era where the need to transition beyond fossil fuels was always accepted as an absolute must and he has expressed the importance of our mission to take the diesel out of food. Practical and pragmatic, John sees AgLoco® playing an important role in providing affordable zero carbon tractors to farms in New Zealand and around the world, especially in light of the 2030 and 2050 Emissions Reductions Plans.

Given the skill set he has quickly developed in his short time with us, our next goal is to convince John to take a gap year and join the workshop crew on a full time contract. Whether he takes us up on the offer or not, John has been invaluable to our recent progress and we are sure he will play an important role in the future of AgLoco®. Finding a promising young student intern like John to join the crew highlights how Canterbury, New Zealand, is the perfect place to develop AgLoco®'s unique technology. If we can gather more talented and likeminded individuals together, we will be well on our way to building the first AgLoco® 150 and taking the diesel out of food.
