I have departed Mindelo, Cape Verde heading north-east to Gran Canaria (Mid-Atlantic Ocean) and the conditions are calm clear skies and low swell and for the 3 night 4 day voyage i seen a light looking westward each night that would appear for 5 or 10 minutes then disappear for 5, 10 or up to 20mins then reappear and continue that general trend throughout my watch.

There were no other vessels in the area according to AIS and Radar. There were limited stars showing due to the bright moon so anything that resembles a star near to the horizon would have been impossible to see.

This light appeared on the same altitude in the same direction and roughly 8pm to midnight local time.

I searched for other vessels with binoculars and double checking with crew that I wasn't seeing anything that they were not seeing. They too could see it and are all seasoned mariners.

The next bit of land mass beyond that light in that direction would have been Puerto Rico 2600nm away so light from city's etc are ruled out from being the reason why the light was there.

I also searched on the Flight Radar app to see if it was an aircraft and that direction was not a known route for commercial airlines and the distant much to vast for a helicopter to be there so that possibility of an aircraft being the reason was also ruled out.

Can anyone explain this?
