Home now... but not for long!

After a couple of fantastic weeks on the road meeting fellow travellers and weighing some great touring setups, we are back home... just long enough to catch up on a few things (like a cosy fire and yummie pizza) before heading off again!

One of the best parts of running a fully mobile weighing service is that we get to stay in some incredible places along the way. This trip we visited Kaiapoi, Parnassus, Kaikōura, Blenheim, Marfells Beach and Motueka, while ticking off a few more NZMCA parks. An unforgettable night at Marfells Beach also convinced us that a DOC Campsite Pass is definitely worth having. We will be back there again!

What a beauty!🚤✨

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to weigh this client's pride and joy - an impressive 8.5m Fishmaster leisure and fishing boat built by Image Boats.

Made for family adventures and days out on the water, this rig certainly turned a few heads. Getting it into position for weighing was no small task either! With very little room for error, the owner manoeuvred his way around the driveway like a pro.

With our certified scales capable of weighing up to 2 tonnes per wheel, there was plenty of capacity to handle this setup. Best of all, the owner left with accurate weight information and the confidence of knowing exactly what he was towing.

Ever wondered what all those weight terms actually mean when it comes to towing?

We thought it was time to break down some of those weight definitions. Understanding these numbers is essential for safe towing and staying within the limits set by your vehicle manufacturer.

✅ Axle Weight - The combined weight of both wheels on the same axle
✅ Tare Weight - The vehicle's weight as it left the factory (without fluids)
✅ GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) – The maximum weight your vehicle can weigh, including fuel, passengers, accessories, payload and tow ball weight
✅ Payload - the difference between the Tare weight and the Gross Vehicle Mass, includes fuel, passengers, Tow Ball Mass and everything you put in it
✅ Maximum Tow Capacity - The maximum Aggregate Trailer mass the vehicle can tow
✅ TBM (Tow Ball Mass) – The downward weight applied to the tow ball
✅ GCM (Gross Combination Mass) – The maximum combined weight of the vehicle and trailer
✅ GTM (Gross Trailer Mass) - The weight on the trailer wheels (does not include the tow ball mass)
✅ ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) – The total weight of the trailer, including the weight on the wheels and tow ball

Knowing these definitions is the first step towards understanding whether your towing setup is safe and compliant.

You can find this info in several sources including Owners Manual, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate or internet. We tend to use the internet when we weigh vehicles to make it easier for the client.

Caught up with friends while we were in Blenheim and took the opportunity to check their camping set up.

Their trailer is built for adventure, carrying everything they need to head off into the wild and spend their days exploring on their bikes. The good news? It came in well under its maximum recommended weight.

With just a few small adjustments, we were able to improve the balance and get the trailer sitting nice and level for towing. Now they can travel with confidence, knowing their setup is safe, stable, and ready for the next adventure.

And the best part? There's still room for a few more treasures to come home with! 🚴‍♂️🏕️✨

Another first for our team to weigh. A Dodge Ram and American caravan.

We met Steve in Blenheim as we were both passing through. Takes around an hour to weigh the vehicles individually then together.

The part we like the best is giving the client the numbers and the conversations that this generates. We are never in a hurry and enjoy meeting great people on our journeys.
