🎉 What a milestone! This year, Malenie is turning the big 5-0 and she's celebrating it with a brand new learner licence in hand!

Malanie lives with an intellectual disability, which meant some study sessions were tougher than others. But with Soti, our learner licence facilitator, by her side, she never gave up. Soti's encouragement, patience, and belief in Malanie kept her going through every challenging moment.

In Mal's own words "Soti has been so good to me. There were a few days where I couldn't do it but Soti kept me going."

Now Malanie is looking ahead to saving up for her own car, and stepping into her restricted licence journey. A huge achievement, and a birthday to remember. 🚗💛

DRIVING INSTRUCTOR, full-time, based in Christchurch.
We deliver driver licence support and driving instruction in Oamaru, Timaru, Ashburton and Christchurch. As part of our desire to “open doors” and support people to achieve their driver licence, we are looking to recruit a new Driving Instructor for our Y-Drive Driving School service in Christchurch.
If you hold a current Full Class 1 Driver Licence and a current Instructor’s (“I”) endorsement, we are keen to hear from you. You must currently be a qualified Class 1 driving instructor to apply for this position.
This position ideally suits a person who is passionate about providing a “hand-up” to people who need support to gain the necessary practical driver licence knowledge and skills to achieve their restricted and/or full driver’s licence.

Another special milestone for our driving instructor legend - Dave Blaikie - 5 years of service with the Y!
Over the past five years, Dave has made a valuable contribution through his dedication, hard work, and commitment. During this time, he has delivered over 5,000 driving lessons - FIVE THOUSAND!!! — which means he’s spent countless hours in the passenger seat, backed by remarkable calm.
Dave lives our Y vision every single day "to be a beacon of opportunity and empowerment for people and communities"
Thanks to Dave, hundreds of learners are now out on the roads driving confidently—hopefully remembering everything he taught them…🚗

If you get demerit points on your restricted car licence between the 7th of May 2026 and 24th January 2027 time could be added onto your licence period, from the 25th of January.

Each time you get demerits, it will extend your licence period by 6 months. If you get demerits more than once, you will have to wait an extra 6 months each time.

Some more things to be aware of:
- If you get demerits from the 7th of May but move to your full licence before the 25th of January, your restricted period won't be extended.
- This extension only applies to people who are still on their restriced licence after the 25th of January.
- Any demit points you get before the 7th of May won't affect you restricted period.
