EV Powertrain Explained⚡What You Need To Know👇
Pop the bonnet on an electric vehicle and you'll find something that looks almost disappointingly simple compared to a petrol engine.

There's no complex arrangement of camshafts, timing chains, fuel injectors, or exhaust manifolds. What you will find, spread between the bonnet, the floor, and beneath the rear of the vehicle, is a set of components that are deceptively sophisticated and work together with a precision that petrol engines simply can't match.

A conventional petrol engine has hundreds of moving parts, valves, pistons, timing chains, camshafts, crankshafts, fuel injectors, spark plugs, oil pump, water pump, alternator, starter motor, and more. Every one of these parts wears and eventually needs attention.

A typical EV powertrain has approximately three moving parts in the motor and gearbox. The battery has no moving parts at all. The inverter, BMS, and DC-DC converter are solid-state electronics. The result is dramatically lower maintenance requirements, fewer failure modes, and the kind of reliability record that EV fleets have consistently demonstrated over the past decade.

EV Charging - AC vs DC Explained⚡What You Need To Know👇
If you've done any reading about EV charging, you'll have noticed that chargers are described as either AC or DC, & that DC chargers are faster. But why?

What does the difference between alternating current and direct current actually have to do with how quickly your car charges? What determines which type of charger is which?

The Bottom Line👇
Most EV owners do most of their charging on AC, overnight at home on a 7.2kW wallbox, quietly refilling the battery while they sleep & DC fast charging is there when you need range quickly: a road trip stop, an unexpected longer day, or a top-up before a long drive when you left home without enough charge.

Understanding the AC/DC distinction helps you know what to expect from different chargers, why your charge speed varies, and why plugging into a faster charger doesn't always mean a faster charge.

Once you grasp the basic principle, AC comes from the grid, DC is what the battery stores, & the conversion happens either in the car or in the charger, the rest follows naturally.

Here's a plain-English breakdown of how each works, what they cost to run in NZ, and which type actually suits your driving👇

Hybrid (HEV) — combines a petrol engine with a small battery and electric motor. The battery charges itself automatically through regenerative braking and the engine, you never plug it in. It can drive on electric power alone for very short bursts, typically a few hundred metres to a couple of kilometres at low speed, with the petrol engine taking over the rest of the time.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) — has a much larger battery than a standard hybrid, which you charge by plugging in at home or at a public charger. This larger battery lets a PHEV drive meaningful daily distances, typically 55–100km, with newer "super hybrid" models extending this further on electric power alone before automatically switching to hybrid mode using the petrol engine.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) — runs entirely on electricity with no petrol engine at all. You charge it by plugging in, either at home or at a public charging station, and it has no exhaust, no fuel tank, and far fewer moving parts than either of the other two options.
