That little amber engine light on your dashboard doesn't come with much of an explanation. Here's what's actually worth knowing.

A steady amber light usually means you can drive carefully for a short time, but don't leave it for weeks. A flashing light is more urgent — it can mean an active misfire that could damage your catalytic converter. A red warning light for oil pressure or temperature? Pull over and switch the engine off.

A diagnostic scan is the right starting point, but it's not the whole job. Fault codes tell you which system has flagged a problem, not necessarily which part has failed. A proper diagnosis combines the scan with your vehicle's symptoms, service history, and some targeted testing.

One of the questions we get asked most often: "Will I get my car back today?"

Totally fair question — you've got places to be. So here's a straight answer:

**WOF:** We offer waiting appointments at 8am and 1pm. Most are done within the hour.
**Service:** Drop off in the morning, usually ready well before we close.
**Repairs/diagnostics:** This one depends on what we find and whether the parts are available locally. If they're on the shelf, we can often sort it the same day. If they need to be ordered in, we'll let you know as soon as we do — not at 4:55pm.

And no matter what we find, nothing gets done without your go-ahead first. We'll always call you to explain what's going on and what it'll cost. If we can't get hold of you, we'll send an SMS you can reply to at your own pace — because nobody wants to come back to a surprise bill.

Petrol tax is on its way out. The Government has confirmed it's moving all 3.5 million light vehicles in New Zealand onto electronic Road User Charges (E-RUC), meaning you'll pay for roads based on how far you drive, not how much fuel you use.

Legislation is expected to pass in 2026, with third-party providers able to offer digital payment options from 2027. Think paying a power bill online, rather than buying RUC in 1,000 km chunks at a retailer.

Heads up for anyone with a vehicle registered in NZ — the rules around Warrant of Fitness inspections are changing, starting 1 November 2026.

The short version: newer and older vehicles will need WoFs less often, fines for non-compliance are going up, and ADAS warning lights (think lane-keeping and steering assist tech) will be checked as part of every inspection from November.

The changes roll out in phases, so when exactly it affects you depends on your vehicle's registration date. We've put together a plain-language breakdown on the blog that covers every category.

Brakes are one of those things that wear gradually enough that it's easy to adapt without realising. You start pressing a little harder, leaving a bit more room in traffic, telling yourself that faint squeal is just the weather.

Book your car in promptly if you notice any of these:

- Squealing, scraping or grinding when braking
- Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel when slowing
- A spongy pedal, or one that sinks further than usual
- The car pulling to one side under braking
- A burning smell near a wheel

Grinding is particularly urgent — it can mean the pad material has worn through and metal is hitting the rotor. What could have been a straightforward pad replacement can quickly become new rotors too.

A proper brake inspection looks at the whole system: pads, rotors, calipers, fluid, hoses and brake lines. We'll tell you what needs attention now, what can be monitored, and what to budget for next time.
