One thing I’m always looking for when I’m out with my camera is how reflections can completely transform an image.

For me, reflections are about more than just capturing a bird in the water. A clean reflection can add depth, symmetry, colour and mood, turning an ordinary moment into something much more visually engaging.

When I’m photographing shorebirds, getting down low is especially important. The lower I can get to the water, the more I can bring the surface and that reflection into the image.

Sometimes just moving a few centimetres can completely change the composition.

A few things I look for when working with reflections:

• Calm water or very light ripples
• Soft early-morning light
• Clean backgrounds that create beautiful tones in the water
• Good head angles and eye contact

And, as always with wildlife photography, patience is key.
