BATHURST WEEKEND IS HERE! ๐Ÿ

There are race weekendsโ€ฆ and then thereโ€™s Bathurst.

One thousand kilometres around Mount Panorama, where horsepower matters - but so do reliability, strategy, pit stops and keeping it off the walls when the pressure builds...

So, whoโ€™s taking out the Great Race this year?
Which driver pairing are you backing?
And whoโ€™s your wildcard pick for the podium?

It might look like we're just smoothing out the inside of an engine cylinder, but there's a lot more going on.

Honing is a precision machining process that helps create the correct cylinder bore finish for the piston rings to work properly.

The process creates a fine crosshatch pattern on the cylinder walls. That pattern has an important job - helping retain a thin film of oil while allowing the piston rings to seal against the cylinder.

Get the surface finish wrong, and you can end up with poor ring sealing, increased oil consumption and premature wear.

It's one of those jobs where the details matter, even though you'll never see the finished work once the engine is back together.

Precision isn't just about how something looks. It's about how it performs.

A freshly cleaned cylinder head certainly makes a better photograph - but appearance isnโ€™t the main reason for doing it.

Deposits, residue and general grime can hide the surfaces and areas that need to be inspected. Cleaning gives the machinist a much clearer starting point for assessing the component and determining what work may be required.

First, make it clean enough to inspect properly.

Then, measure and make decisions based on what is actually there.

Save this for the next time someone says an engine component โ€œjust needs a cleanโ€.

Looking for those parts for those garage projects?

We are a Prolink Performance dealer - with a range of parts available for local pick up. Ask us about the range, or pop in to tell us about that engine project you've got on the go

A quick glance wonโ€™t tell you whether an engine component is straight, round or within the specification required for the job.

That comes down to cleaning, measuring and knowing what youโ€™re looking for.

This is where specialist engine work begins - before machining starts and before parts are ordered. The measurements help determine what can be reused, what needs attention and what the correct next step should be.

Precision isnโ€™t the finishing touch. It shapes the entire job.

Got an engine or component that needs a proper assessment?
Bring it in and talk to the team.

Every engine we touch has a home: a track, a road, a boat launch, or a shed where someone's been dreaming about what's next.

This week we're tuning in to the season coming up in Nelson and the Tasman, speedway, club racing, boat races, and reminding ourselves why we do this.

If your engine's going to race this year, now is the time.

That engine that has been sitting in the corner all winter?

Now is usually when the rest of the project starts moving - and the engine becomes the next job on the list.

Whether youโ€™re restoring a classic, rebuilding a performance engine or finally getting back to a long-running project, this is a good time to talk to us about the machining work involved.

Bring in what you have. Tell us what youโ€™re building. We can look at the engine or components and talk through the next step.

Summer has a habit of arriving quickly...
