At Carter’s Tyre Service Methven, we love a good bit of tyre tech — especially the tiny stuff most people never notice. Those little cuts in your tyres (yep, the ones you thought were just “there”) are actually clever bits of engineering called sipes.
They’ve been helping drivers stay upright for over 100 years… which is longer than most of us have been trying to avoid slipping on the Rakaia Gorge road in the rain.
The right tyre + the right technology = the right grip for the right job.
Whether you’re towing, touring, farming, or just trying to get the kids to school without sliding around like a baby deer on ice, sipes are doing their thing to keep you steady.
Have a read of the post below — it’s a great reminder that the smartest tyre features are often the smallest. And if you’re not sure you’ve got the right tyre for your role, you know where to find us.

🛞 Ever Wondered What Those Tiny Cuts in Your Tyres Are?
Those little cuts are called sipes, and they've been helping improve traction for over 100 years!
The story goes back to 1923 when John F. Sipe was working in a slaughterhouse and was tired of slipping on the wet floors. He discovered that cutting small slits into the soles of his boots dramatically improved grip. That simple idea was later adapted for tyres and remains an important tread feature today.
So, what do sipes actually do?
đź’§ In wet conditions, sipes open up as the tread contacts the road surface, helping to disperse water and improve contact with the bitumen. This creates extra biting edges, helping the tyre maintain traction and reducing the likelihood of slipping.
âś… Better wet-weather grip
âś… Improved Road contact
âś… Added confidence behind the wheel
Next time you're checking your tyres, take a closer look at those tiny cuts. They're small, but they play a big role in keeping you connected to the road.
