Looking to add Air-Conditioning to your vehicle?

Wanting to stick with 'old-school' reliability but craving the cool relief of modern air-conditioning systems, this customer requested that we install a complete air-conditioning system into his trusty 1998 Mazda B2600.

The customer supplied his own 2nd hand A/C kit from a similar vehicle, with the hope that we could easily bolt it into place. Unfortunately, the kit did not quite fit his car as hoped. Only the evaporator and A/C pipes from the kit could be used. This is only 2/5 of the parts supplied. We sourced a suitable condenser, compressor, mounting hardware, drive belt tensioner, drive belt and new receiver drier. We also custom-manufactured mounting brackets for the condenser.

Having assembled the system and converted it from R-12 to suit R-134a, we wired in a new loom for the switch and sensor and gassed her up! It now works a treat.

Not all our jobs turn out to be due to faulty heating or A/C! These pictures are of a 2012 Ford Focus that came into our North Shore, Auckland branch. The customer complained of having wet carpets, foggy windows and a non-functional A/C system. They assumed it was all connected.

Blocked A/C drains can often cause damp carpets, so we took a look to see what we could find. Turns out it was two different issues, and neither of them was the drain tube! The windows were fogging up because the car was full of water, as seen in the photos, and the A/C wasn't working due to a leaking evaporator.

Further investigation regarding the water was required; We checked to see whether the heater core was leaking... No luck there. Due to the volume of water found in the vehicle, we suspected a rainwater leak. We stripped the interior out of the car, hung everything out to dry and ran water over the exterior of the car to locate the leak. Sure enough, water was running into the car from the LHS rear tail light and through the boot stay gas brackets.

To resolve we removed both lights and brackets and resealed everything, tested again and successfully fixed the issue! It took two days for the carpets to fully dry. The interior was re-fitted, and a dry car was returned to the customer!

We also removed any refrigerant left inside the A/C system, as the customer did not wish to repair the A/C leak at that time. Ensuring that the refrigerant was disposed of correctly and not released to the atmosphere.
