This MINI’s driver’s seat wouldn’t move forwards or backwards. The culprit was hiding underneath.

The R56 came in for a WoF and service. Along with a few ordinary bulb issues, the driver’s seat was stuck in one position.

We removed the seat from its rails and found a stone covered in hair wedged under the release mechanism. Obstruction cleared, seat refitted, and the car passed its WoF. Happy days.

This 2018 BMW X1 came in for a WoF. We found the driver’s-side engine mount had split, which meant it failed the inspection.

This is a hydraulic mount. The fluid inside helps absorb vibration, and a worn or leaking mount can allow more vibration through the car.

This photo shows what we found during the inspection. If your BMW or European car has developed a new vibration, request a booking online so we can check the cause.

Fuel costs add up. A few basic checks can help your car run efficiently.

• Check tyre pressures while the tyres are cold, using the figures on your vehicle’s pressure label or in the handbook
• Keep servicing up to date, including oil and filters when they’re due
• Notice uneven tyre wear? Have the cause checked, including wheel alignment

Audi S4 V8 timing chains: she’s a big job!

This one had a misfire at idle. We traced it to one camshaft being out of time, then carried out a full reseal and timing chain replacement.

Back together and the misfire is fixed. A few workshop photos show what went into the job.

Losing coolant in your Volkswagen or Audi?

This non-runner came in with very little oil, a noisy engine that was tight to turn, and a suspected overheating event.

We removed the sump and checked the main bearings, which were fine. A borescope inspection didn’t reveal the problem, so the engine came out for a closer look.

We found a melted piston and a destroyed cylinder bore. We couldn’t source a replacement engine, so the repair was put on hold while the customer looked for one.

This Honda would start, rev high and then stall.

It came to us after a crash and repairs. First, we confirmed exactly what the car was doing.

Our diagnosis pointed to a large air leak. A smoke test revealed a split intake manifold. We replaced it, and that solved the starting and stalling problem.

The smoke in these photos is from our diagnostic test. It helped us find the cause and get the repair right.
