A safety chain fitted wrong is almost as bad as not having one.

In NZ, your safety chain needs to be rated to at least the GVM of the trailer. It attaches to the towing vehicle's chassis or towbar, not the tow ball. And it should be as short as practical: long enough for the trailer to turn without binding, short enough to catch the drawbar before it swings into traffic if the coupling fails.

The most common issues: wrong rating, attached to the tow ball, fitted to the coupling bolts or fitted too long. All are roadworthy failures.

7x4 or 8x5? Save this before you buy 📌
