Tip No 5 when buying a car
Check the cars history and legal status. Do not pay any more until you are happy that the vehicle is free of debt, and the ownership can be passed to a new owner without road user chargers etc.or any other encumbrances.The get a full mechanical check with either VTNZ or AA and point out anything you detected on the test drive you would like checked.

No 4 Tip for buying a Car
Make a short list of vehicles that suit your budget and your other personal needs, and make an appointment to test drive them all. If you are not in the same town, arrange to have an AA check done, but be sure that it is the correct vehicle for you before you do that.
Also make sure you are buying from a reputable car dealer, preferably a NZ new vehicle and where ever possible with a full history. Don't forget to discuss freight charges if it is from out of town. Also don't forget to discuss options for finance and warranty.

Tip Number 3. for Buying a Car
Work out the kind of car that suits your needs ie 4 wheel drive, small hatchback etc, then compare the ones available that suit your requirements. Once you have decided on a model get an understanding of what your money (budget can buy). Make sure you compare apples with apples, not all are spec'd the same and there are lots of traps for the inexperienced. A great example of this is ute's, as sometimes the 4 wheel drives look exactly the same as the 2 wheel drives but there is a world of difference in value. Do not buy privately unless you know what you are buying as there is no comeback. A reputable Dealer, has to operate under strict guidelines so go try your negotiation skills and get yourself a good vehicle.

Tip No 2. Work out what is important in your lifestyle. Do you need 7 seats, do you need something to cart the dog, is economy important to you. Once you work out the "must haves" and "the nice to haves" write your list and put them in order of importance.
