"Let Them Eat Cake"

The household income cut-off point above which parents are responsible for supporting their adult sons and daughters, 18 / 19 year olds who after Thursday night's "passed under urgency" legislation will no longer be eligible for DSW benefits is $67,225. After deducting P.A.Y.E. ($12,388) and the mandatory ACC earner's levy, 1.75% ( $1,176.44), that leaves a net $53,661 to cover the family's entire annual living costs.
That's barely more than Social Development Minister Louise Upston's $52,000 a year taxpayer-funded accommodation allowance to live in the Wellington apartment she jointly owns mortgage-free.
PM Christopher Luxon told Morning Report today that his Govt. (the Govt. which during its first weeks in power cut Labour's Apprenticeship Boost scheme) won't have unemployed young people being a drain on the NZ taxpayer; if they're not in work they should be at University, Polytech or other training ---- incurring of course the burden of Student Loan Debt. as a foundation for adult life? The unemployment rate for 15 to 19-year-olds in New Zealand reached 25.3% in the June 2026 quarter. (Stats NZ. data)
Shades of Jenny Shipley's 1991 Welfare reforms slashing unemployment, sickness and family benefits by 25% to curb state dependency, heavily accelerating the growth of child poverty and community food banks across Aotearoa. Is this a National Party thing? What delusional world do these people live in? It's certainly not the same one as the much touted Ordinary Kiwi Mums and Dads they claim to feel such empathy with. Shipley once said she'd successfully managed her household budget for a month on the same amount a welfare recipient would receive.
Who remembers Luxon's nonsensical bu****it 2023 election campaign statement that his weekly grocery bill was about $60 ?
Suspend, for six months, their Parliamentary salaries and perks, block their credit cards and bank accounts, send them to join the dole queue at WINZ with others who've been laid off. Ask these comfortable, sorted so & sos to front a month's rent as a bond for a rental, give them three kids to feed and clothe, a 25 year old Corolla needing two new tyres for a W.O.F., toss in a hefty Winter power bill, an insurance premium, a debt. overdue with the G.P. etc. etc. and they might, just, begin to understand how a huge chunk of our population lives.
