Windows that fog up and take ages to clear are usually blamed on the demister, but the cabin filter is often the real cause. Once it's packed with damp leaves and debris, airflow through the ventilation system drops and moisture has nowhere to go.

This is especially common through autumn and winter in Christchurch, when leaf litter and damp air build up faster than most drivers expect. A clogged cabin filter also affects heating efficiency and air quality inside the car.

It's worth checking if demisting is taking longer than it used to, particularly if it's due for replacement at your next service anyway.

A WOF and a service check are two different things, and passing one says nothing about the other. A WOF is a safety inspection against a fixed set of Waka Kotahi standards - brakes, tyres, lights and structural condition.

A service is a broader check of how the vehicle is actually running: oil and filters, fluid levels, belts, and general wear that a WOF doesn't cover at all. A car can pass its WOF with a service well overdue, and a well-serviced car can still fail a WOF over something unrelated to how it drives.

Book your vehicle in with the Matipo Garage team to keep both up to date.

An engine needs a large volume of clean air to burn fuel efficiently - far more than most drivers would expect. When the air filter is clogged with dirt and debris, the engine has to work harder to pull air through it.

That extra effort shows up as reduced performance and higher fuel use, particularly on cold mornings when the engine's already working harder to get going. It's a straightforward part to check, and one that's easy to overlook between services.

If it's been a while since yours was looked at, the team at Matipo Garage can check it while your car's booked in for anything else.

A cold engine and a short drive is one of the toughest combinations for engine oil. It needs sustained heat to burn off condensation and stay effective, and a five or ten minute trip across town rarely gets there.

Over a Christchurch winter, this adds up. Oil that never reaches proper operating temperature breaks down faster and protects less, even during normal daily driving. If most of your trips are short hops - school run, supermarket, work and back - it's worth keeping an eye on service intervals rather than stretching them.

The team at Matipo Garage can advise on the right interval for how your car's actually being driven.

Engine oil moves slower once the temperature drops, and it's filtered several times a minute to keep contaminants away from moving parts.

In winter, cold starts and thicker oil put extra strain on that filter before the engine's even properly warmed up. An oil filter nearing the end of its life struggles more in these conditions, letting more grit circulate right when protection matters most.

Regular oil and filter changes matter year-round, but winter is when a tired filter tends to show its age. Book your vehicle in with the Matipo Garage team for your next service.

Free battery health check at our Addington workshop this month.

A proper battery test takes about five minutes and tells you whether your battery has the cold-cranking amps to start your car on a frosty Christchurch morning, or whether it's about to leave you stranded.

Most car batteries last around three to five years in Canterbury conditions. If yours is older than three years and you haven't had it checked, now is the time.

We'll test load, voltage and charging system in one go, and we'll tell you straight whether it needs replacing or whether you've got another season in it.

No pressure, no upsell. Just the numbers.

If you can't remember when you last replaced your car battery, it's probably time to check. The rough rule for Christchurch winters: three years is when most batteries start to weaken, five years is when most fail. There's usually a date stamp on the battery itself, a sticker or a code punched into the top, telling you roughly when it was made. If you can't find it or can't read it, that's a sign the battery has been in there long enough to be worth testing. Cold weather is what exposes a weak battery, not what causes it. A battery that's been quietly degrading all year will start fine in summer and refuse to crank on the first frost. Better to know now than find out in a supermarket carpark in July.

If you've ever tried to clear a frozen Christchurch windscreen by running the wipers, you've probably done more damage than you realised. The blades drag across the ice instead of sliding over water, and the edge of the rubber tears against the frozen surface. Worse: if the blades are frozen to the glass, the motor can strain hard enough to damage the linkage or burn out the wiper motor itself. The right way to clear a frozen windscreen is from inside, with the demister running, while you scrape the outside with a proper ice scraper. Five minutes of patience saves a wiper motor replacement and a set of new blades. The wipers are there to clear rain, not ice.

The sign that your battery is on its way out before it actually fails is a slow cranking. If the engine takes longer to turn over than it used to, especially on cold mornings, the battery is struggling.

An old battery will overload the alternator and the charging system which can cause more problems over time.

This on a Christchurch winter morning means you're one cold night away from a no-start. The good news: a battery test can identify the battery's health condition.

Get your battery tested early to avoid getting stuck in the cold.

Most expensive repairs don't start as expensive repairs.

They start as small issues that go unnoticed. A worn belt. An ageing battery. Low fluids. A small leak. A component that's starting to fail but hasn't completely given up yet.

Regular servicing isn't about fixing things that aren't broken. It's about finding problems while they're still simple, affordable and convenient to deal with.

That's why servicing schedules exist. Not because your car suddenly needs attention on a particular date, but because routine inspections help identify wear and tear before it turns into a breakdown.

If your service is due or overdue, booking it in now can help keep your vehicle reliable and give you a clearer picture of its overall condition.

If it's been a while since your last service, now's a good time to get it checked. Talk to the Matipo Garage team.
