Christchurch has lost its Rugby World Cup games because of earthquake damage to AMI Stadium and the accommodation sector.

Mayor Bob Parker said his head understood the decision, but "from my heart I will probably always find this decision hard to accept or agree with at some level".

Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey said that in the meantime people needed to continue to boil water for drinking and cleaning their teeth. "It's not just a theoretical risk.

The water is contaminated. People do need to boil it."

Christchurch people should be able to drink water from the tap again by the end of the month.

Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison said officials hoped to be able to lift boil-water notices across the city within a few weeks.

Quake-ravaged Christchurch is set to benefit from Prince William, who visits the city today, and Kate Middleton's wedding after they asked people intending to send them wedding gifts to instead give money to charity.

Donations via the website, www.royalweddingcharityfund.org, are possible in six currencies.

Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton have created a charitable gift fund to help celebrate their wedding.

Tonnes of debris from the CTV and Pyne Gould buildings will be kept isolated amid fears about asbestos and the wish to be as sensitive as possible about victims' remains contained in the rubble.

The death toll from the 6.3 magnitude quake on February 22 is likely to be about 180.

The 260,000 tonnes of silt removed from city streets would be turned into sand dunes at the old Burwood landfill. "They will be planted and will become a new part of our environment," Mark Christison said

rubble from damaged buildings in the city centre will be used to rebuild the city. It is being sorted at the Burwood landfill, with materials being salvaged where possible.

"Concrete and bricks will be a valuable resource for reconstruction and it's a waste to fill the landfill with it. We'll recycle what we can," Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison said.

Christchurch is getting ready for the return of up to 60,000 residents who fled the city after the February 22 earthquake.

It is expected that 110 schools will reopen this morning, a major reason to anticipate the return of refugees.

By the end of the week 143 schools - 88 per cent of the city's total - will be open.

Of the 166 confirmed dead, 94 were found in the CTV building, 15 in the PGC building and the remainder from other locations around the city in buildings, in the streets, in vehicles including two buses, in the open and in their homes.

However, police say it is too early to say exactly where people lost their lives and the picture is confused.
