A few weeks have passed, and a lot has happened, been done, and changed on my ABTgolfMK3 project.
The Brembo brake calipers have been repainted bright red, and of course, new Brembo stickers have been added.
About two years ago, I inquired with the RDW (Dutch Vehicle Authority) about the possibility and approval of installing the 16V ABT engine in the Golf 3.
I was told it was possible as long as I stayed within certain limits with the CO.
I then continued with the project.
Recently, I came across some messages somewhere that got me thinking and made me decide to call the RDW again.
The answer was that I wouldn't get the KR engine approved without a CAT and Lambda sensor...
The MK3 body is from 1997, and CAT and Lambda sensors have been mandatory since around 1995.
This was a disappointment, of course... but I think in solutions, not in problems.
After consulting with some VW friends, the plan was to switch to the Digifant injection system, because it does have a lambda and cat, plus the ABT engine can stay in place.
So last week I bought and picked up a 2.0 16V (9a) engine that already has all the necessary parts I need for the modification.
Today I spent the whole day tinkering with Jeroen and have already made real progress.
The new VR6 front end (with radiator and condenser) and dual fan are installed. We've removed all the Kjetronic parts we had already installed and reinstalled many things from the Digifant.
Next step: derusting and painting some brackets, ordering some hoses, ordering air and breather filters, and discussing the wiring harness that needs to be modified to G60/digifant
Laterrrrr 🤘
