ARRIVE & DRIVE | Crash Course day 1 🩵💚

Last week, another motivated international group joined the Arrive & Drive training day at RBWE Driving Skills Centre, led by Pieter.

There was a strong sense of focus throughout the day, with lots of good questions, teamwork and valuable discussions along the way. At the same time, there was also plenty of laughter and a relaxed atmosphere.

Professional, motivated and enjoyable – exactly the kind of energy that makes these training days so valuable. 💯👍

🟢 𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

Dutch driving feels completely different from Indonesia.
Back home it’s chaotic, full of motorbikes weaving everywhere, honking as communication, and more flexible rules.

Here everything is super disciplined, organized, and everyone actually respects speed limits and bike lanes. No more “squeezing through” — it’s all smooth, predictable, and cyclist-first!

🟢 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

In Indonesia I drove like a warrior in traffic battles, here I’m doing constant neck exercises and roundabout dances like a ballet performer!
The test is a real precision sport compared to home. And no turning right on red still surprises me every time.

🟢 𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀:

For expats of India as I come from there, we have been trained to reactivate driving, forcing us to focus more nearby 50mts distance.

Dutch traffic is different everyone drives predictable and expects your behaviour to be the same, the key is to focus at least 200m ahead or further in highway. It is a challenge to adapt but worth it. 💯

🟢 𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

In India, driving slow is considered safe driving behaviour, but it considered impolite unless absolutely necessary driving exam in the India is more about controlling the car. On the contrary Dutch implying the traffic rules that we learned in theory, that I felt was the main difference

🟢 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

For us in India, honking is a language while we drive absolute integral part of driving... Also to vent out frustrations 😅.
In Dutch driving honking is reserved for absolute worse situations and is offensive/highly impolite....if u did receive a horn, u messed up big 😂

🟢 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 & 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲:

Arrive and drive was pretty fun to be honest. It immediately helped improve my looking structure, steering movement. I found it really helpful for special manoeuvre too. You do it once and your foundations are set.

A simple memory tip for right-of-way at equal intersections:

This phrase helps you remember the priority rule in the Netherlands at equal intersections:

When traffic approaches from the right (passenger side), you must protect your passenger — so you give way and stop if needed.

When traffic approaches from the left (driver’s side), you are the king — meaning they must give way to you.

It’s a quick and practical way to stay safe and make the right decision without hesitation.

The best is to switch off your previous experience and try to build a new system in your mind which includes buses, bicycles, speed pedelecs, old people and children.
For me it was like when learning a new language, you build a new mindset with cultural differences.

In my homeland there is no bicycle pads.
The traffic is organized differently: there are big streets with four or five lanes moving one way, lots of traffic lights and there are only pedestrian crossings with pedestrian priority.

All crossings and highways are organized in the same way so you need to learn just one behavior and there is practically no need in prediction of situations.

There are also a lot of traffic jams so you learn pretty well how to move slowly and forget about the flow.

What was great is that first you have a training day on the special driving premises with other students and see their mistakes and understand that you may do the same and try to correct them.

Take your time—everyone learns at their own pace. For me, it actually took two tries for both the theory and practical exams before I got my license.
I’d recommend focusing on the theory first: do as many mock exams as you can until you feel confident. Then, when you start driving, focus on applying that theory in practice—especially the priority rules at uncontrolled intersections, which are super important here.

🟢 𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

The biggest difference for me is definitely the amount of bike traffic—it’s on another level compared to back home. 🚴🏽🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

The other big one is the priority rule at uncontrolled intersections: drivers coming from the right always have the right of way. It really changes the way you drive, especially if you’re already an experienced driver and used to different rules in your home country.

One of the funniest differences for me is how much deeper you need to go into traffic rules to pass the Dutch theory exam. Back home, it felt a lot simpler. Here, the theory is really detailed, and then the practical exam is almost an hour long in total!

Here, the theory is really detailed, and then the practical exam is almost an hour long! You have to do two special maneuvers, drive both in the city and on the highway, and even use a navigation system for part of the test—it felt like a full challenge.
