On this day 45 years ago in 1978 Mercedes AMG's 450 SLC made its debut at the Monza round of the 1978 ETCC
(European Touring Car Championship)
On Friday, a blocked fuel pump ended practice, and on Saturday the very limited stopping power of this odd heavy car ended after 16 laps, with a fifth spot on the starting grid for Sundays race as a result, behind three BMWs and a Zakspeed Es**rt.
While a lot of cars retired with engine failures; the Mercedes duelled with 1600- and 2000 cc cars, but kept running until the end; a never expected third overall (2nd in it's class Div5) at the finish, behind the winners Facetti/Finotto in the dominant BMW 3.0 CSL
What better day then spending a bit more time on our true recreation of this iconic car wich will be raced in the Dutch NKGTTC and YTCC classic racing car series soon
