Abarth Punto JTD ready for the ELE Rally this weekend!

After a Sadev gearbox overhaul, software finetuning and another road test, the Ruud Middel Rally Team has worked hard to get the Punto in top shape for the event.

The 61th edition of the ELE Rally is held at different locations around Eindhoven/Veldhoven (NL) at Friday-Saturday 29-30th May.

Good luck! 💪

Because of a production stop at Garrett, these GTB2056v are becoming more and more rare.
This particular one, modified for the turbokit package is heading to a racer in the Netherlands, to power up his 147 JTD!

Two Nero Vulcano Giulias, yet with so different powerplants.
The left one, the JTDm, now owned by another Alfa lover down the street.
The right one, the 2.0T Veloce will be the new testing ground for the mods we have in mind...

Also we purchased an extra fully assembled 2.0T engine to speed up the development process and as a backup for parts.

The plan will be:
1. Fitting the "well known" hybrid 2263 first, as a benchmark test
2. Adding the Banks Power modules and sensors to the Idash datamonster, to log all engine data we want to know
3. Fitting the all new turbo setup with auxilary parts, which development has already started.
4. Compare the results from both the Banks Datamonster as the Performance Logger and go from there...

Stay tuned!

Giulia 2.2 JTDm turbo upgrade part 11: project overview and results

In late 2022 we decided to build a true upgrade turbo conversion specifically for the Giulia 2.2 JTDm. The reason, typical hybrid turbos are not delivering the results we are after, which is 350 engine horsepower with a broad powerband and zero smoke output. Especially driveability and torque at low rpm cannot be sacrificed as this takes a lot of the fun away of a street vehicle.

With the previous post #10 roughly one year ago let’s describe the mods that were done in the meantime:
- Several turbo specs were tested
- Modification of the CAC cooling system
- CP4.1 high pressure fuel pump upgrade

Let’s start with the turbo, before we tested the 1756, 2060 and 2262. To investigate how to further optimize the turbo system we added a turbo rpm sensor. Actually the Giulia 2.2 Veloce has one on the stock turbo, but this being a Ghibli turbo doesn’t have it. So we used a Banks Power sensor that we can monitor and log with the Idash. This sensor was placed into a new compressor intake that we had custom CNC milled with anti surge slots for our housing.

First we prepared a 2365 turbo, that was far from a success. The 2365 had so much reduction in boost threshold that it resulted in low boost faults, strange vnt actuator behaviour with extreme turbo rpm spikes of up to 300k rpm, very scary. Once running at the correct boost pressure (we are talking > 3500 rpm) there was hardly any reduction in EMP compared to the 2262.

As this turbo clearly wasn’t working efficiently and potentially dangerous we took it off and prepared a 2265. So same hotside as the 2262, only the compressor increased to a 65mm exducer 6+6 wheel. That was working better than the 2365 in terms of spool, but still much worse than the 2262. Also after a gearshift the boost dropped too much, something that was before never an issue. Somehow these turbos were not working, whatever we tried with the VNT adjustment. We decided to move back to the 2262 combination, but with a different compressor aero (from 9 full blades to 7+7 blades) and another custom made anti surge housing. That brought back the turbo response completely. Now equipped with the turbo rpm sensor we stepped up the manifold pressure to 3650 mbar absolute and with

Testing day at Circuit Zolder for Ruud Middel Rally Team with their Abarth Punto JTD. Overall big gains with the engine, with more torque out of tight corners and much more power for the straights. Still a little fine tuning needed but this will be sorted asap. We look forward to see the results of the 2026 season! 💪

Another new video from MechaNick, he has fitted our catch tank set together with a CCV separator replacement at a Giulia 2.2 JTDm. Also he mounted a prototype of the revised catch tank kit with a different placement into a slightly cooler position in the engine bay.
Check it out for a full fitting tutorial and valuable tips and tricks!

Recap of 2025: We can call it the year of the oil pressure mods for Giulia & Stelvio 2.2 JTDm!

First of all, in cooperation with Squadra Tuning we were amongst the first to have the oil pressure live data visible on the central screen for MY16-17-18-19 cars, using the Performance Logger. With reference values set, we got people to check and compare oil pressures and taking actions, rather than relying on low pressure warnings alone, which led to less engine failures.

We have fixed more than a few Giulias and Stelvios with this problem ourselves, and engineered new parts to increase reliability.
Also we worked together with YouTuber MechaNick to show the full procedure of the oil pressure recovery job for everybody to watch for free.

Because, with more and more owners and mechanics being aware of this potential issue, we should be able to keep these cars on the road more and enjoy the positive aspects of the 2.2 JTDm engine.

In terms of sales, 2025 was again highest, a growing trend which was kickstarted in the Corona period and is still continuing. The market need for Alfa Romeo parts, whether being performance, reliability or security/anti-theft parts still seems to be strong and we are happy to meet it and to continue developing new parts that can make our Alfas better and more fun to drive!

Thanks to all customers and followers and let’s achieve new milestones in 2026!
