Implications of the Brexit Deal for British candidates who are wanting to apply for CBR exams
The departure of Great Britain from the European Union has consequences for British candidates who want to take exams at the CBR. For the British driving licenses and other identity documents there are now rules based on the date of residence in the Netherlands.
CBR employees will inform British candidates until 29 April that admission to the examination, and passing it, does not entitle them to a driving licence and that this depends on their date of establishment. CBR reports that it does not check this date of establishment.
Underlying driving licence
Until 29 April, candidates with a valid UK driving licence are still eligible for practical exams in which an underlying driving licence is required. This is because they are still treated as 'EU nationals'. This changes from 30 April onwards. Then Britons must have a valid EU, EEA or Swiss driving licence in order to be allowed to take practical exams that require an underlying driving licence.
Residence permit
Until 30 June 2021, British nationals may present themselves for examination with a valid British passport (with or without a residence sticker), a valid British identity card or a valid Dutch residence document.
From the 1st of July 2021 onwards, the same rules apply for Britons as for other non-EU nationals. This means that from that date onwards, British nationals may only identify themselves with a valid Dutch residence permit or a valid British passport that has a valid sticker for residence in the Netherlands.
