Everyone comes around and says “BE HAPPY.” Yes genius, I had no idea that I had to be happy. You scared the s**t out of my sadness. I am happy now. Thank you. Sadness is not a generic fever. You can’t give everyone paracetamol. Every sadness has a different shade. Every scar has a different depth. Every person has a different story. You can’t just ask people to be happy. You have to first understand their sadness. You have to first know their reasons. Then, in conversation, you need to discover the reasons that were hidden even from them. Healing takes time. Healing a person needs effort. A hurting soul does not heal by laughing at memes. They need to be read and understood like deep, layered poetry. Sadness makes a home in a person. You can’t just ring the doorbell to get it out. You have to reach inside that home. You have to know that feeling. You have to understand the depth of that sadness. And only then you can really understand why that person is sad. That understanding is gold.

You might think whatever may be your reason. But no, that’s the problem. It’s not whatever for that person. It’s so personal, so, so personal. The moment you don’t care about their story, the sad souls give up on you too. They don’t find you worthy enough to reveal their scars. They realize that you are not willing to go deep into it. So they abort. They smile. They laugh. And they change the topic. They realize that all you could offer is your advice of “Be Happy.” And they are sick of that advice. They don’t want a cheerleader. They want a soul that can feel their seething soul. They don’t want someone to laugh with. They want someone on whose shoulders they can cry until their eyes run dry. They don’t want sympathy, but they also don’t want someone who does not respect their pain, their sadness. It’s not easy. I know. But don’t even pretend that you want to help if you are not willing to raise hell to get them out of their hell. A false hope hurts them more. Stay away if you are too scared to come too close. Their sadness can burn you too. And that’s why they keep their distance.
