AWO-IDEMILI HISTORY
Awo was the only son of his father Okukoro . Okukoro founded his enclave in those days when men walked a very long distance in hunting adventure and in search of good abode. Farmland, and water. It was in about 1535AD that Okukoro discovered his home and settled with his wife Anum. It was this enclave that is referred to as Awo-idemili today.
Awo got married to his tall and beautiful wife; Nwaobuaku, the daughter of Osu Nnechi, a brother to Osu Ihiteukwa. It was a case of oneness in thought, decision making and project involvement. Awo and his wife begot three sons; Etiti, Amaraihe, and Ufuruaku, and a daughter called Edegwourimma.
Etiti got married and begot two sons whom he both named Ofeke. He identified them as Ofeke ukwu and Ofeke nta. Ofeke ukwu begot Isieke. Amaimo and Ede ukwu. Ofeke nta had two sons; , Edenta and Ubaha Ezike
Amaraihe got married and begot four sons; Eze Ogwu. Ubaha Eze Awo, Obibi and Ama dim.
Ufuruaku had four sons; Ahaba, Ohukabia, AMa okwu and Ubaha Eze deke. In search of their common destiny, they moved along in groups. Each of the settlements developed into a large family- okwu; Okwu Etiti, Okwu Amaraihe and Okwu Ufuruaku. They were known as Okwu-Awo na ato.
All together they were thirteen sons forming the thirteen villages in Awo. They spoke like one and drank wine with one cup hence the slogan Awo ji ofu iko anu mmanya.
Edegwourimma fondly called Urimma was married to Egbuataji and they begot a son named Uri, derived from Edegwourimma, the mother. The Uri people inhabited the land after Iseke clan by the west.
The Origin of The Name
The gods fought for the man that did not contrive and commit evil. Awo’s hand s were clean and so a goddess gave him a charm that protected him from the hands of neighbours who are very wicked. The charm was capable of rendering the gun powder in the enemies’ guns wet and ineffective. Awo named this charm Edemiri. Edemiri protected him and gave him complete victories over his enemies hence the name Awo-Edemiri. It was contact with Onitsha civilization and dialect that brought conflict in the usage of the name Awo-Edemiri to Awo- Idemili .
