🚗🔥 CNG vs. Fire: The Science Behind Why It's So Safe! 🔥🚗
You might have seen that shocking video of a CNG vehicle on fire, yet the fuel tank itself doesn't explode. It's not magic—it's science! Let's break down why Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is engineered to be incredibly safe compared to PMS (Petrol)
1. The "Up & Away" Effect 🎈
CNG is primarily methane, which is LIGHTER than air. A gasoline leak pools on the ground, creating a huge fire risk. But a CNG leak? It rapidly rises and dissipates into the atmosphere, making it much harder to ignite.
2. The "Hard to Ignite" Factor 🔥
CNG doesn't just light with a spark. It needs an extremely high temperature to ignite on its own—around 540°C (1,004°F)! That's much higher than gasoline (pms) or diesel, making accidental ignition far less likely (almost impossible) .
3. The Fort Knox Fuel Tank 💪
CNG is stored at high pressure(at about 3,600 psi!), so the tanks are built like fortresses to contain this amount of pressure:
· Materials: Made from incredibly strong carbon fiber composite.
· Pressure Relief Device (PRD): In a fire, this valve safely vents gas to prevent a rupture.
· Automatic Shut-off Valves: These cut the gas flow instantly in an accident or if a leak is detected.
The Bottom Line:
CNG safety is a powerful combo of physics (lighter-than-air + high ignition point) and engineering (super-strong tanks & smart valves). It's a fuel designed with safety as the top priority!
