The Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist Every Driver Should Have

A truck that leaves the yard without a check is a breakdown waiting for a location.

Here is a simple checklist that takes less than ten minutes and has saved more runs than most drivers will admit:

→ Engine oil: level and colour
→ Coolant: level and condition
→ Brake fluid: level
→ Power steering fluid: level
→ Tyre pressure: all axles, including spare
→ Tyre condition: no cuts, bulges, or exposed cords
→ Lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights, reversing lights
→ Mirrors: clean, adjusted, secure
→ Wipers: functional and not streaking
→ Air system: wait for full pressure before moving if air brakes

Post this in your drivers' room. Print it. Laminate it if you have to.

Brake Fade: The Problem That Sneaks Up on Long-Distance Drivers

Brake fade happens when your brakes overheat and lose their stopping power. It is not dramatic at first. The pedal still feels okay. The truck still slows down. But slower than it should.

On a flat road, you may not notice. On a descent, carrying twelve tonnes, with a bend coming up, you will notice.

Brake fade is caused by:
→ Worn brake pads or drums that cannot dissipate heat properly

→ Dragging brakes that stay in contact with the drum when they should not be

→ Overloaded trucks on routes with sustained downhill stretches

The fix is not complicated. It is maintenance. Check your brake system before long-haul trips. Replace worn components before they become dangerous components.

The Fleet Manager Who Changed His Supplier After One Bad Week

He managed twelve trucks. Every week he was patching something because he had built his parts supply around the lowest prices in the market.

One week in February, three of his twelve trucks were off the road at the same time. All three had failed on parts that had been replaced in the previous two months.

What Makes a Genuine Part Worth the Price

This is for the buyer who always asks: why is your part more expensive than the one down the road?

A genuine OEM spare part is manufactured to the same specification as the one that came out of the factory with your truck. The material grade is correct. The dimensions are exact. The heat tolerance, pressure rating, and wear resistance have all been engineered for your specific engine.

The part down the road that costs less was made to look right. Not to work right. There is a difference, and your engine knows it within weeks.

What Your Engine Oil Is Telling You (And Most Drivers Miss It)

Pull out the dipstick. Look at the oil. What do you see?

Clear amber = healthy. Keep to your service interval.

Dark brown = due for a change. Still working, but getting tired.

Black and thick = overdue. Your engine has been working without proper lubrication.

Milky or grey = trouble. This means coolant is mixing with oil. Stop the truck immediately.

Most drivers never check the oil between service intervals. Most breakdowns have a chapter that starts here, with oil that nobody looked at for three months.

Checking the oil takes forty seconds. A damaged engine takes four to six weeks and a lot of money.
