Happy new month to all.

Our esteemed customer,

Please note that DOT marking on tyre does not translate to date of manufacture.

DOT means department of transportation. This is a certification given to Tyre manufacturers in US to ascertain that they are certified and with the number, tyre can be traced to it's origin.
It's followed by some numbers which signify the plant, manufacture special code and country code which the tyre was manufactured.

Please, it is wrong to ask that, what is the DOT of my tyre, rather ask, what is the manufacturing date of my tyre.

Thanks for being with us always.

Management.

HOW TO SPOT AN ALTERED MANUFACTURE DATE ON A TYRE

There are some people in the market who know how to engrave a tyre. They engrave a "FAKE DATE" on the sidewall of the tyre. They achieve this by heating up a specially constructed iron rod (with numbers) and altering the MANUFACTURE YEAR on older tyres. For example, a tyre that has manufacture date 0312 (3rd week of 2012) could become 0316 (3rd week of 2016) after alteration. It is very difficult to spot this alteration (These guys are that "good").

HOW TO SPOT AN ALTERED MANUFACTURE DATE

Tyre dates are either embossed or debossed (stamped) by the manufacturer. When the date is embossed, you can use METHOD 1 to spot a fake date. However, when the date is debossed (stamped), you can spot a fake date by using METHOD 2.

METHOD 1: FOR EMBOSSED DATE

You can spot an altered manufacture date on a tyre by taking a closer look at the manufacture date. For example, if the manufacture date is "0316" (3rd week of 2016) and you notice that "031" is embossed, while "6" is debossed, just know that the manufacture date has been tampered with. These shady tyre dealers cannot create embossed "FAKE DATES" (at least for now). They can only create debossed dates by stamping. Though, some can go as far as erasing the date completely and writing a new one.

METHOD 2: FOR DEBOSSED DATE

Tyre dates are either embossed or debossed (stamped) by the manufacturer. When the date is embossed, you can use the above method to spot a fake one. However, when the date is debossed (stamped), you can spot a fake date by looking at the last digit in the date. For example if the debossed (stamped) date is "0316", you should take a closer look at "6" to check if it's as clear as the other digits "031". You should also check whether "6" is perfectly aligned (in a straight line) and of the same font size with the other digits "031".

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO ALL VEHICLE USERS!

Good morning. I have this quickly to share with you.

Many people have been wondering what could be the cause of the incessant tyre burst accidents on Nigerian roads. The major cause is that we put to much pressure in our tyres.

Read the following from one of our customer.

''I was preparing for a journey, I changed some of my tyres and I asked the vulcanizer that ' what is the recommended tyre pressure? ' He said 50. I said alright, he should inflate it to 50 all round.

When I got to where I was going, I was discussing with some ppl on the issue of the minister that died on the road due to a burst tyre and wonder what could have happened because nobody could imagine a minister would be travelling with expired tyres as many would think is the major cause of tyre burst.

A man ( lived in US for many years ) said that the major cause of tyre burst in Nigeria is that we put to much pressure in our tyres and that each car has recommended tyre size and pressure clearly written on it by the manufacturer. I was surprised and begged him to come and show me where it's written on my car. To my greatest surprise, it's by the drivers door which I enter everyday without noticing it. By the time we checked, the recommended pressure for my tyres is 32! and I just traveled with tyres on a pressure of 50! He took me round his compound and showed me that of the cars (which includes a jeep and a sienna) there, the highest was 32. some were even 29!

He further explained that tyres are made of rubber and expands at high temperature. So, when you are travelling in the afternoon when the asphalt on the road is hot, the tyre will want to expand. If the pressure in the tyre is to much and wouldn't accommodate the expansion, a burst is likely to happen at that time''

This is exactly how it happen, some vulcanizer go as high as 70psi, that is signing a death warrant already.

Pls check the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle. I also recommend you have your own pressure gauge as most used by the vulcanizers were not even good.

Please take note.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A TYRE BLOWOUT

There are 6 simple steps to take within a maximum of 2 minutes and you will be safe. They are as follow:

(1) DON'T PANIC in the event of a blowout, calm yourself down first because your car will start misbehaving and you need to take charge.

(2) Hold FIRMLY to your steering wheel with both hand, NO VIGOROUS TURNING, as you concentrate on the road and your mirrors, in seconds study the movement pattern of the car. Your car will naturally swerve to the direction of the burst tyre.

(3) Take off your foot from the accelerator, DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO PRESS THE BRAKES, IF YOU DO, YOU HAVE A 95% CHANCE OF A SOMERSAULT. The car will decelerate gradually while you concentrate on the road to avoid collision with any other road user.

(4) Disengage the gears of the car by shifting to neutral (n) as you still maintain a firm grip on the sheering wheel and put your eyes on the road.

(5) After a while depending on your initial speed, your car come to a speed less than 60km/h when it is now safe to GRADUALLY apply the brakes and navigate to the side walk

(6) Ultimately, it is now safe to put the car to a complete stop and turn off the engine. You have just saved yourself and passengers from untimely death.

NOTE:
Of course, everyone in the car will be in a panic mode BUT this is NOT THE TIME TO LISTEN TO THEM, it is TIME TO CONCENTRATE.

Always ensure that the tyres of your car have prescribed air pressure. Having lower air pressure in the tyres, than what is prescribed, adversely affect driving stability, causes high fuel consumption and even harms the suspensions. On the other hand, excess air pressure results in faster wearing down of tyres, apart from a hard and bumpy ride. Remember that air pressure in tyres should be checked when they are cool, as the air expands when the tyres are hot.
