Customs CG Visits FCT Minister,
Secures Land to Build Schools for Staff Kids

In his unwavering commitment to strengthening collaboration with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDA's), the Comptroller-General of the Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, paid an official visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesome Wike.

The event occurred on Thursday, 9 October 2023, at the Federal Capital Territory Secretariat in Abuja.

During the interaction, the CGC congratulated Wike on his appointment as FCT Minister by President Ahmad Bola Tinubu GCFR.

He stated, "One of the reasons for our visit is to congratulate you on your appointment as FCT Minister. FCT holds a pivotal position in Nigeria, and I believe that by getting it right in FCT, we can get it right in Nigeria."

"We anticipate transparency and integrity, and we believe that Nigerians will look forward to a smart and proud FCT."

The CGC elaborated on the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, which encompass revenue generation, curbing smuggling, and facilitating trade while noting the significant activities in port areas and other service formations.

He emphasized the need for policies to support the service in fulfilling its mandates in the FCT, considering the substantial presence of over 2,500 service personnel in Abuja. He pointed out the challenge of sending the children of Customs personnel to private schools in the city.

To ameliorate the problem, the CGC made a compassionate appeal to the Minister for the allocation of land to enable the construction of primary and secondary schools for the children of Customs personnel in Abuja.

Responding, the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesome Wike expressed appreciation for the visit and assured the CGC of his commitment to allocate land for facilities that will serve the service's needs.

The Minister, who assured the CGC of his unflinching support to make his tenure a successful one, also said his Ministry had recently received Nigeria Customs Service's letter of request for land allocation - which, according to him, will be approved in due course.

Minister Wike said, “Our policies, like that of Nigeria Customs Service, is to generate revenue to carry out projects in Abuja, but considering the good intentions of the CGC to establish schools to ensure quality education, we're ready to approve NCS' request.”

He also urged the Customs Legal Adviser and the Federal Capital Territory Authority to fine-tune all the legal modalities to accelerate the process.

A MEDIA BRIEFING ON THE INTERCEPTION OF ABOUT EIGHT TRAILER LOADS OF FOREIGN PARBOILED RICE BY FEDERAL OPERATIONS UNIT ZONE A, ON 6 OCTOBER 2023 BY THE ACTING COMPTROLLER-GENERAL OF CUSTOMS BASHIR ADEWALE ADENIYI MFR AT THE FEDERAL OPERATIONS UNIT ZONE ‘A’ IKEJA, LAGOS

Gentlemen of the press

1. I appreciate your presence here today as we convene at the Federal Operations Unit Zone 'A' in Ikeja, Lagos, to address a matter of utmost significance to our nation's economic well-being. Today's briefing pertains to the commendable interception of approximately eight trailer loads of foreign parboiled rice by the Federal Operations Unit Zone 'A' on October 6, 2023.

2. Agriculture, being the cornerstone of Nigeria's economy, underscores the federal government's commitment to achieving self-sustaining growth and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians.

3. In alignment with this commitment and the spirit of patriotism, our dedicated officers executed a series of operations resulting in the interception and seizure of 7,029 50kg bags of foreign parboiled rice. These decisive actions took place at various times and locations within the border corridors of the South-Western states. The objective was twofold: to discourage potential traders from engaging in smuggling activities and to inflict financial losses on active smugglers.

4. Beyond the parboiled rice seizures, our operations yielded significant results in September, with the interception of various goods. These include:
a. 35,100 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS)
b. 1,100 liters of diesel
c. 1 40-foot container carrying 360 bales of used clothes
d. 1 40-foot container containing 150 cartons of ladies' handbags, 50 bales of nickers, and other falsely declared items
e. 1 20-foot container of unprocessed wood
f. 106 cartons of foreign frozen poultry
g. 55 pieces of used fridges
h. 110 pieces of used compressors
i. 148 cartons of foreign soap
j. 121 cartons of expired hair oil
k. 25 units of vehicles (Tokunbo)

5. Investigations into some of these seizures are ongoing. Fourteen suspects have been apprehended in connection with various offenses, including violating import/export guidelines, concealment, undervaluation, wrong classification, smuggling, and contravening policy directives.

6. The cumulative duty paid value of the intercepted goods amounts to an impressive One Billion, Seven Hundred and Fifty-five Million, Eighty Thousand, Eight Hundred and Ninety-eight Naira (1,755,080,898).
7. Furthermore, the Unit generated Seventy-two Million, Eight Hundred and Seven Thousand, Twenty-five Naira, Eleven Kobo (N72,807,025.11) in revenue through meticulous documentary checks and the issuance of demand notices on consignments that were found to have paid lesser amounts than the appropriate customs duty.

8. Importers and licensed agents are urged to make sincere declarations, adhere to existing import and export guidelines, and avoid the risk of losing their investments. Compliance is not only a legal obligation but also a strategic choice that ensures the smooth and efficient flow of goods across our borders.

9. In conclusion, I extend my gratitude for your attention and your role in disseminating this vital information. Together, as responsible stakeholders, we can safeguard our nation's economy and contribute to the welfare of our fellow citizens.

Thank you for your time.
