In JCI parliamentary procedure is the guiding principles to conduct effective meetings, so as a Jci member it is pertinent that one must have a vast knowledge in it. It's the premise that the National Legal Counsel of JCI Nigeria Adeyanju Adeonipekun initiated the Train the Trainer Academy 2023.
The Train the Trainer Academy is initiated to equip its participants with the in depth knowledge on parliamentary procedure, the Jci Constitution and meetings etiquette such that this knowledge can be transferred to other members of the organisation.
For me, I consider this opportunity a very rare one and I'm going to be intentional about my learning, so that I can educate others.
The academy commenced with a virtual session with our trainer JCI Sen. Ibijuwon Sofekun and he took us through some salient points as it has to do with Emotions, Logic and Facts, then afterwards we touched on various types of motions.
In a nutshell, I have been able to learn new things on Parliamentary Procedure, and the following are my take away from the 1st session:
1. I have been able to understand that facts remain facts and not emotions nor logic can upturn facts, while logic might be good it is still not facts.
2 Quorum is the basis of every meeting, simply because it protects the interest of the majority, and then again it is significant for proceeding to stand during a meeting.
3. No matter how articulate, or important a motion is, if it doesn't have a seconder, the motion dies a natural death.
3. A motion of Question of Privilege can be moved when there is an emergency around the meeting Area or a critical situation that can affect the members comfort ability during meetings
4. A motion to Recess needs to be voted for to stand during a meeting because it's an amendment of the main motion that was still on the floor.
5. There can only be One MAIN MOTION on the floor at any point in time, the motion can only be vacated by a VOTE, this vote,, in turn, determines the passage or failure of that motion
It was indeed a great time to learn, relearn and unlearn key Principles of Parliamentary Procedure through an erudite individual.
