Ever wondered what those little black dots on your windscreen are for? They’re called frits.

And they’re doing way more than you think.

Most people assume they exist to help keep the Sun out of the driver's eyes. But that's not really what's happening.

These dots play several crucial roles in both vehicle safety and manufacturing. Made from ceramic paint baked directly into the glass, frits help bond the windscreen to the vehicle by providing a textured surface for adhesives and shielding them from damaging UV rays.

This outer "frit band" is what keeps your windscreen firmly attached and structurally secure over time.

But frits also have another clever function. Arranged in a pattern known as a dot matrix, they help regulate heat distribution when the glass is bent during manufacturing.

This prevents a distortion effect called "lensing," which could otherwise warp your view.

And yes — they serve an aesthetic purpose too, masking unsightly glue and blending the dark border with the transparent glass. In some vehicles, extra frit dots even block sunlight sneaking between sun visors.

So next time you notice those dots, give a nod to one of your car’s unsung engineering heroes.
