There is a misconception in the world that high octane fuel will make your car go faster or run better, this is not true. The octane rating only rates the fuel’s resistance to engine knocking. Gas stations typically offer three different octane levels of fuel: regular, mid-grade, and premium. The regular grade generally has the octane level required by most cars, and mid-grade and premium are each a step up.

Then, of course, there is the super high octane fuel available at race tracks, which is designed for the extremely high compression ratios that race car engines have. Pretty much all of the fuel grades commercially available have cleaning additives in them, so you need not choose a high octane fuel with the idea that it will clean your engine better.

You can run low octane fuel in cars that are 1996 and newer but you will not receive the expected fuel mileage as you would get with higher octane fuel. And if your car has a higher compression ratio you can cause damage to the engine no matter the year of the vehicle.

Just like you can examine an animal's poo to get an idea of its health, you can pay attention to the quality of your car's exhaust to get an idea of what's going on inside the engine. As the engine burns fuel and creates exhaust, lots of different things are happening. Unfortunately some of these things aren't supposed to happen.

10/12/2010

Things like burning oil, evaporating coolant and leaving unburned fuel in the exhaust -- these are not good to see. Pay attention to what's coming out and you can get a good idea as to what problems your engine may be having, often before they get bad. This saves you money.

Alternator carries out two important tasks. It recharges your battery while the vehicle is running to keep it at peak starting power. The alternator also works with your battery as a team to operate electrical components, such as headlights, windshield wipers, and more. A malfunctioning alternator can cause electrical components to operate erratically, or even cause your engine to suddenly stop running.

Engine oil lubricates and removes heat from internal engine components. The oil filter removes harmful deposits from the engine oil, preventing them from being circulated throughout the engine. As a general rule, however, engine oil should be changed every 3,000 miles to keep the engine healthy and to prolong its life.

USEFUL ACCESSORIES ;-
The tire pressure monitoring caps are set to a specific tire pressure,
which cannot be adjusted. They sell the caps with a number of preset
pressures, so you should be able to find one that fits your application.
The preset pressure is printed on the top of the cap nice and big so
even a station attendant will know how you prefer to inflate your tires.

Drive belts rotate when the engine is running. Follow safety precautions to avoid personal injury. To
replace the drive belts, loosen the hardware securing engine-mounted
accessories, adjusting brackets, and tensioners. Remove the old drive
belts and install and adjust the new drive belts.

26/10/2010

If one drive belt is worn or has failed, the remaining drive belts should also be replaced. Often, drive belts are overlooked until they fail; inspection and maintenance can prevent roadside breakdowns.
