Mention any other car and someone will immediately shout, “Just buy Corolla!” Oga, can we hear the budget and what the person needs first? 😂
The Corolla has earned its reputation, but some of us have turned that reputation into an excuse to overprice almost any example—even the tired ones.
“Na Toyota” does not repair a worn engine, fix a bad gearbox or erase years of neglect. And “it has second-hand value” shouldn’t be the answer to every question about a car.
Buy the condition, assess what you’re getting for the money, and stop letting the badge do all the thinking.

Before you buy that Chinese car, ask one question: “If something breaks, where will I get the replacement?” 👀
The design can be beautiful. The interior can be luxurious. The price can be attractive. But ownership goes beyond what you see in the showroom.
Mechanical parts are one concern. Body parts are another.
Can you readily get the correct engine mounts, suspension components, water pump or gearbox parts for that exact model?
And after a minor accident, can you find a headlight, bumper, fender, windscreen or radiator support?
A car can still have a healthy engine and become unusable because one essential replacement part is unavailable.
This isn’t the same across every Chinese brand or model. The strength of the local distributor, available stock and aftersales support matters. “We can order it” also deserves a follow-up: how long will it take, and what will it cost?
Before paying, check the warranty terms, parts availability and who can properly diagnose and repair the vehicle.
Buy with the next five years in mind—not just the excitement of delivery day.

🚨 THAT CLEAN HYUNDAI SONATA COULD BE HIDING AN EXPENSIVE ENGINE PROBLEM.
The Sonata offers attractive styling, comfort and plenty of features for the money. But before buying one with a GDI engine, understand what you’re getting into.
Certain Sonata 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo GDI engines have a documented history of premature connecting rod bearing wear. In affected engines, this can progress from a knocking sound to engine seizure—and, in some cases, fire.
This means an engine failure isn’t always simply because the owner “didn’t service the car.”
⚠️ Warning signs you should never ignore: • A persistent metallic knocking sound. • An oil pressure warning light. • Sudden loss of power or engine stalling.
If the engine starts knocking or the oil pressure light comes on, stop safely, switch it off and arrange an inspection. Continuing to drive could turn a serious problem into a destroyed engine.
Buying a used Sonata? Verify the engine variant, check the VIN for applicable recalls, review its service and engine replacement history, and get a proper inspection. A clean body and quiet five-minute test drive aren’t enough.
Not every Sonata has the same engine or the same risk. And for imported vehicles in Nigeria, don’t assume an overseas recall automatically guarantees a free replacement here.

The Omoda 5 incident circulating online raises a serious question: how much do we really know about the engineering underneath the cars we admire?
First, some context. The documented Malaysian incident dates back to April 2024. Chery attributed the problem to incorrectly calibrated welding equipment at a supplier and recalled 600 vehicles as a precaution, identifying 60 with the affected components. It should not be presented as proof that every Omoda 5 has this defect.
But a rear axle failure is a serious safety concern. This assembly helps keep the rear wheels positioned correctly. A structural failure can compromise stability and control—with potentially devastating consequences.
As buyers, we need to look beyond panoramic roofs, beautiful screens, ambient lighting and attractive prices. Manufacturing quality, recall transparency, spare parts availability and dependable after-sales support deserve just as much attention.
For Nigerian buyers, especially those purchasing imported vehicles, ask the seller to confirm whether your VIN has any outstanding recalls. If a recall repair was required, request evidence that it was completed.
Chinese manufacturers are making impressive progress, but every brand must earn trust through consistent quality and accountability. A recall deserves attention; how the manufacturer resolves it matters too.
