Top 3 reasons why your engine will misfire
Firstly, we need to understand what a misfire is. What is an engine misfire?
Technically speaking, an engine misfire is when one or more cylinders misses it fire stroke. Then this will cause an imbalance in the vibration of the car.
An average vehicle owner will typically describe a misfire as vibration from the engine, constant jerking or loss of power when accelerating or going up-hill.
There are various reasons why this would occur on a vehicle, the three most common are;
Bad or failing fuel pump:
The fuel pump in your car is what helps to supply fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. The fuel pump is made from a motor that generates heat whenever it’s working. When this pump start to go bad, it doesn’t supply as much fuel as need by the engine thereby causing it to lose power or misfire. In some instance the car could go off while in motion and it wouldn’t start immediately. If the car is allowed to cool of for few minutes it would eventually start. Symptoms like this, is not limited to, but can be an indication that the fuel pump is bad.
Spark plugs:
The spark plug is what causes the air-fuel mixture which is already compressed in the cylinder to ignite and combust. The spark is delivered through the ignition coil which pass high voltage through the node, down to the tip of the spark plug. Talking about the tip of the spark plugs, the center and the and side electrodes of a spark plug must be an exact distance; otherwise, your plugs wont fire efficiently. Adjusting the distance between the two electrodes is called gapping your spark plugs. You need a feeler gauge to gap your spark plugs properly.
Electronic control unit ( ECU ) / brain box:
The electronic control unit of a vehicle also popularly known as the brain box is a microcomputer that controls actions such as ignition timing, electronic fuel injection and general power output. For the ECU to perform these actions, it needs to receive and analyze various information that it received from various sensors. When the internal components of the vehicle computer goes bad or is starting to fail. It could cause vehicle to intermittently have issues such engine misfire, stalling or loss of power.
