One Proton X70 customer came to us with this complaint:

👉 Driving normally at around 30–40km/h, the car suddenly starts to vibrate/shudder for a few seconds, then goes away.

After inspection, we found the problem was related to the torque converter.

ATF Oil Cooler – Don’t Ignore It! 🚗⚙️

A small ATF oil cooler problem can turn into a major gearbox repair if it is ignored.

The ATF oil cooler separates automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and engine coolant. As the vehicle gets older and mileage increases, the cooler, seals or internal components can deteriorate. If the cooler fails internally, coolant may mix with the ATF, causing serious transmission damage.

⚠️ Possible consequences:
• ATF becomes milky/pink or contaminated
• Harsh or abnormal gear shifting
• Gearbox slipping or delayed engagement
• Clutch/friction plate damage
• Valve body contamination
• Internal gearbox damage
• In severe cases, gearbox overhaul or replacement

🔧 Preventive maintenance matters

For vehicles using an integrated ATF coolant cooler, consider having the cooler inspected or replaced at high mileage. Around 150,000 km can be used as a preventive reference for some vehicles, but the actual interval depends on the vehicle model, cooler design and manufacturer’s recommendations.

💡 Prevention is always cheaper than a gearbox overhaul.

What happens when the CVT chain breaks?

The CVT uses a steel chain/belt running between two pulleys to transfer power from the engine to the wheels.

If the chain breaks:

Engine still runs → CVT pulley turns → chain cannot transfer power → wheels receive no drive

So you can experience exactly what you described:

Car is driving normally.
Suddenly it loses movement/power.
Engine may continue running normally.
Selecting D or R may not move the car.
There may or may not be a transmission warning light.
In some cases, you may hear a loud clanking/grinding noise immediately before it fails.
But the important question is: WHY did the chain break?

A chain normally shouldn't just break randomly. I would ask your mechanic to check what caused the failure.

Common possibilities include:

- CVT chain wear
High mileage or prolonged wear can weaken the chain.
- CVT fluid problem
Wrong fluid, badly degraded fluid, insufficient fluid, or overheating can cause excessive wear.
Honda CVTs require the correct Honda CVT fluid (HCF-2).
- Pulley damage
If one of the CVT pulleys has scoring, wear or damage, it can damage the chain.
- Bearing or pulley problem
A damaged bearing can cause abnormal loading and eventually damage the chain.
- Previous CVT problem
If the transmission previously had slipping, shuddering, whining or overheating, the chain may have already been deteriorating.
Sudden high load
- Hard acceleration, especially when the CVT is already worn, can put substantial stress on the chain.
