BYD is taking its tiny, Japan-exclusive electric kei car global. The vehicle is called the Racco, and it was built from scratch to fit Japan’s strict, ultra-compact size regulations. It has been a massive hit. Since hitting Japanese roads in July 2026, the micro-EV locked in over 2,000 orders in just two months—pushing BYD past a milestone of 10,000 total passenger vehicles sold in the country since 2023. Now, the Chinese automaker wants to see if that success translates to the rest of the world, starting with right-hand-drive markets that share Japan's tight road layouts.
The global rollout is already creeping forward. Drivers in Macao can now reserve a Racco, and a formal launch event is coming up in Sri Lanka. BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang noted at a recent event in Kanagawa Prefecture that the company is treating these early markets as a testbed to gauge demand while they quietly build out local service networks.
But BYD isn't just shipping the Racco overseas; it's using the car's clever engineering as a blueprint for Europe. The Racco’s secret weapon is a proprietary, space-saving X-Pack battery that tucks voltage-converting inverters directly under the floorboards. BYD plans to use this exact tech to design a brand-new mini-EV specifically for European cities over the next few years. As European regulators look into new micro-vehicle rules to spark EV adoption, BYD's move into tiny, affordable cars could give traditional European automakers a serious run for their money.
