Jetour Auto Malaysia launches T2 i-DM with PHEV drivetrain

Following its preview at KLIMS 2026 and public displays at other locations, the Jetour T2 i-DM PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) was officially launched tonight with a price of RM162,800 (excluding insurance).

The first 2,000 owners will get an Early Bird package worth up to RM3,000. Besides a V2L cable, they can choose either a wallbox or RM2,000 credit for charging (at ChargesSini stations).

This latest addition joins the Jetour T2 range in Malaysia which was launched in March this year. While the T2 has a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine only, the T2 i-DM’s PHEV powertrain consists of a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a single electric motor generating 165 kW.

Only FWD
The 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission delivers power only to the front wheels, unlike the T2 which has AWD.

Though it has a smaller engine displacement, the PHEV powertrain has a combined output of 265 kW (360 ps)/610 Nm, which is more than the 245 ps/375 Nm of the T2.

Up to 1,200 kms range
Power for the motor comes from an 18.4 kWh battery pack which can provide a claimed electric-only range of over 100 kms. Working together with the engine, the 70-litre fuel tank is good for a range of up to 1,200 kms, it is claimed.

Unlike hybrid electric vehicles which are self-charging, a PHEV can be recharged and the battery pack in the T2 i-DM is said to require around 27 minutes to go 30% to 80% with a DC fast-charger at 57 kW.

The electricity from the battery pack can also be used to power external equipment or devices with the 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability using an adaptor cable.

Same rugged looks as T2
Visually, the i-DM has the same the boxy, rugged design language of Jetour’s T-series of off-road vehicles (different from the urban-oriented crossovers like the Dashing and VT9.

PHEV badges identify this new version, and there’s also a second flap on the right side for the charging port.

Likewise, the 5-person cabin is also similar with a 15.6-inch central infotainment unit and 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, plus a few extra features.

Closing off the 580-litre rear cargo compartment is the Electric Suction Tailgate which smoothly swings the door to lock it in place.

Jetour Auto Malaysia offers a vehicle warranty of 7 years/150,000 kms with the powertrain having a warranty of up to 10 years/1 million kms. The battery pack is covered by a separate 8-year/160,000-km warranty.

Tesla Experience Centre opened in MidValley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur

When Tesla began taking orders for its first car in America in 2006, before initial customer deliveries commenced in 2008, it fundamentally disrupted the traditional automotive retail model.

Instead of establishing franchised dealership networks and having physical showrooms with salespeople to take orders, the American automaker chose to sell directly using online channels.

That direct-to-consumer approach was unprecedented for an automaker at the time, although it would prove to be far-sighted since it is used today by virtually all automakers (thought complementary to having showrooms and dealers).

Tesla has maintained its foundational business philosophy and critics are silenced since it very quickly became the bestselling EV brand in the world (but now No.2 to BYD).

When it entered the Malaysian market in July 2023, it stuck to the same approach and customers could only buy a Tesla by ordering it online through their own website. Initially, there was only one physical Tesla facility located in Cyberjaya for its own subsidiary as well as aftersales support.

However, over time, as in other markets, it slowly opened Experience Centres to display its models so interested customers could actually feel and sit in the EVs, and test-drives were available.

From 1 to 7 Experience Centres
Today, it has 7 such Experience Centres, including one in Kuching, Sarawak which opened in February this year. It has also opened aftersales centres in a few locations to provide service support to owners in various regions of the country.

This week, Tesla Malaysia opened the seventh Experience Centre in Kuala Lumpur at MidValley Megamall, complementing the first one that opened at Pavilion Damansara in October 2023. Located between the Megamall and the Gardens Mall, it acts as an experiential hub for the public to see and touch the products and learn about the EV technology in them.

Own charging station network
As part of its commitment to the government to help in the transition towards electric mobility, Tesla has also been installing its proprietary fast-charging stations around the country. Known as Superchargers, these charging stations can provide DC supply up to 250 kW for quick recharging.

Four of these Superchargers have been installed at Zone B on Level B1 of the Gardens Mall. This addition brings Tesla's nationwide network to 21 stations with 92 individual Supercharger points. Originally only for Tesla vehicles, Tesla Malaysia has made available Superchargers at 4 stations in the Klang Valley since March 2026 to EVs of other brands.

The network includes 18 Destination Charging sites (78 chargers) that supply AC power which recharges at a slower rate. Up till the middle of 2026, Tesla owners could use the Destination Chargers for free but there is now a charge of 88 sen/kWh. The Destination Chargers are only for Tesla vehicles.

Six more locations are planned across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Seremban, and Penang before the end of 2026.

Cannot use new MyKad for BUDI95 at the pump? Nothing has gone wrong but the new MyKad has the data chip on the back instead of the front. The cardreader at the pump is designed to make contact with a chip on the card facing upwards, so it does not detect the chip on the new card.

The simple solution: turn the card over and insert with the side having the chip sliding into the slot first. This will allow contact and you will be validated for BUDI95. The rest of the process can then proceed as before to pump fuel.

PRO-NET provides 3 Proton e.MAS models to Malaysian police for evaluation and operational trials

PRO-NET, the subsidiary of PROTON dedicated to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), delivered 3 of its electrified vehicles to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for an operational trial to assess the real-world suitability of electric and hybrid electric powertrains for law enforcement fleet operations.

3 electrified models
The evaluation fleet comprises all 3 models of the Proton e.MAS brand – the e.MAS 5 Premium, the e.MAS 7 Premium, and e.MAS 7 PHEV Premium Plus. By deploying a mix of fully electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) powertrains, PDRM personnel will be able to assesses varying levels of electrification during everyday duty cycles.

The police force will monitor core operational metrics including drivability, practical cabin and cargo utilization, and charging logistics. To facilitate uninterrupted testing, Gentari is providing complimentary charging services throughout the trial period.

Collecting operational feedback
Transitioning municipal and security fleets to NEV platforms requires a clear understanding of runtime requirements, range management, and infrastructure integration. The data and operational feedback gathered during this trial period are expected to guide future government decisions regarding the viability of electrified models for routine police operations, including crime-prevention patrols.

This trial represents a continuation of a long-standing relationship between the Malaysian automaker and domestic public service sector. As a national automaker, PROTON has historically supplied a significant number of vehicles to the police force as well as various other government agencies across Malaysia, serving as a primary mobility provider for official duties.

As government ministries increasingly explore lower-emission transport alternatives, PRO-NET continues to position its e.MAS range for institutional adoption. Outcome-based trials like the PDRM evaluation will prove critical in determining whether electrified powertrains can match the demanding, heavy-duty operational standards required by various agencies.

Real-world testing
Commenting on the initiative, Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid bin Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of PROTON, said: “This evaluation with PDRM is a good opportunity for us to put our e.MAS vehicles into a real-world environment and allow the team to experience them beyond a conventional test drive."

"With the e.MAS 5, e.MAS 7 and e.MAS 7 PHEV, PDRM can experience different electrified powertrain options and assess how they perform and fit into their operational requirements," he explained.

“We understand that transitioning to EVs, particularly for a large fleet, involves more than just the vehicles themselves. It is also about understanding daily usage, performance and charging requirements,” he said.

“We are pleased to support PDRM through this evaluation, which will provide valuable insights into the usability and suitability of electrified vehicles for their requirements. As more government agencies explore electrified mobility, PRO-NET remains committed to working closely with our government partners and supporting Malaysia’s transition towards a more sustainable mobility ecosystem," he added.

Perodua to use Tan Chong assembly plant for painting services for QV-E

Perodua has signed an agreement with Tan Chong Motor Assemblies (TCMA) to use the painting facilities at its Serendah plant for painting the fully electric QV-E which was launched at the end of 2025.

The initial agreement, described in a filing with Bursa Malaysia, is for a period of 3 years (from June 1, 2026) with an option of continuation.

Although Perodua has an advanced paintshop at its own manufacturing complex (which is located about 4 kms from TCMA), it is likely that the smaller volume of the QV-E makes it impractical for the high-volume facility to handle.

As it is, Perodua built a dedicated plant (also within its complex) for making its first EV model. Again, this would be due to it being very different from what the Malaysian automaker has made since 1994, and the initially low volume. Even for hybrid electric vehicles, many local assembly plants have had to reconfigure their facilities to handle high-voltage equipment like batteries.

Supporting local ecosystem
Perodua has long strived to use local resources where possible as part of its mission to develop and support the domestic automotive ecosystem. Using the facilities at TCMA is in line with that mission as the factory is owned by the Tan Chong Group, one of the oldest Malaysian car companies with a history going back to 1957.

Second Tan Chong plant
The factory in Serendah is Tan Chong’s second one, the first having been built in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s. It was the last of the first wave of vehicle assembly plants set up following the government’s call to automakers to assemble locally in the mid-1960s.

The Serendah plant, which began operations in late 2007, had an initial investment of RM191 million (5.5% of which was contributed by Nissan as a minority shareholder in the plant). It started off with an annual capacity of 14,000 units with potential to increase to 50,000 units a year. Being set up in the 21st century, the plant benefited from newer manufacturing technologies and processes.

Long experience in painting
This included the processes at the paintshop which will provide the exterior finish for the QV-E. TCMA has long experience with painting vehicles and in fact, the plant in Segambut was the first in Malaysia to use the Electro-Deposit (ED) system where the whole body is immersed in a large tub of primer paint.

Apart from the electrically-charged metal body attracting the paint to bond more effectively, the immersion also ensured that every square millimetre of metal was covered and protected. The ED system is today common in all assembly plants and its adoption in the 1970s boosted corrosion resistance of vehicle bodies.

This is not the first time that TCMA is providing painting services for another brand. In the 1980s, Mercedes-Benz bodies from the assembly plant in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, were sent to the TCMA plant in Segambut for painting.

Volkswagen's most powerful GTI won't be a Golf

For half a century, the GTI badge has been regarded as the benchmark for practical performance, defined by a formula that balanced everyday usability with accessible driver engagement.

That legacy began in 1976 with the original Volkswagen Golf GTI, a small FWD hatchback that gave birth to the ‘hot hatch’ segment. Five decades later, Volkswagen is bringing the GTI badge into the electric age with the most powerful production GTI ever built.

Fully electric GTI
While it has been Golf GTI (over different generations) that has always been the most powerful GTI, this GTI will only spiritually be related to that model as it is instead the fully electric ID.3 GTI.

Visually, the ID.3 GTI draws heavily from historic design cues while establishing a distinct electric identity. Up front, standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights are linked by an illuminated light bar and logo, topped by the traditional red GTI horizontal stripe. Vertical LED lighting elements set into the lower bumper signal its electric powertrain, positioned alongside a high-gloss black honeycomb air intake and front splitter.

Standard 20-inch alloy wheels, named Worthersee in homage to the famous Austrian owner gathering, fill the wheelarches. Unlike the outgoing ID.3 GTX, which had black exterior paneling on the roof and tailgate, the ID.3 GTI has the roof section, spoiler, and bootlid finished in full body colour, giving a longer, lower profile.

Rear-wheel drive
Fundamentally different from what traditionalists associate with the GTI badge, the ID.3 GTI has only a single electric motor, powering the rear wheels. The motor generates 240 kW (326 ps)/545 Nm to give a 0 – 100 km/h capability claimed to be 5.6 seconds and a top speed somewhere beyond the 200 km/h electronic limit.

Maximizing transfer of all that output to the road relies on a standard Launch Control system, while an adaptive DCC sports chassis and progressive steering work with a low centre of gravity collaborate to preserve the agility and driving dynamics that have long characterised the Golf GTI.

Powering the motor is a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery that can provide up to 601 kms of range. When recharging with a DC fast charger at 183 kW, the pack can refill from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. The ID.3 GTI also has V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality via an optional PowerSocket adapter, making it possible to use the electricity in the battery pack to power external devices or equipment.

GTI theme within
Echoes of the red-on-black GTI theme can be found in the cabin, complete with a full-width red dashboard accent stripe and a red 12 o’clock marker on the multifunction sports steering wheel.

Pressing the illuminated GTI button on the steering wheel activates a dedicated driving mode that firms up the chassis and powertrain response, switches the digital instrument display to focus on power output and speed, changes ambient lighting to red, and plays a synthetic combustion engine note through the cabin.

The sport seats are finished in a modern interpretation of the classic tartan pattern, dubbed ‘Superclark’. Infotainment duties are handled by a 12.9-inch touchscreen sitting alongside an enlarged digital instrument panel, supported by updated physical controls for climate settings and a central rotary k**b for audio functions.

An augmented-reality head-up display is available, while advanced Travel Assist with red-light detection capability is part of the active safety system.

Deliveries in 2027
While the new model has just been presented in Germany, production will only start towards the end of 2026, with first deliveries starting during the first quarter of 2027. Prices have not been announced but estimates are between €50,000 and €54,000 in Europe (RM234,650 – RM253,450).

Volvo EX30 Cross Country brings back ‘ruggedised’ concept for EV age

Long before crossovers and SUVs dominated urban roads, Volvo saw growing demand for a vehicle with rough-road capability that was less bulky and more road-capable than SUVs (or 4×4 vehicles, as they were then referred to). Its offering, which appeared in 1997, was a variation of the V-series stationwagon that it called the ‘Cross Country’.

Designed for harsh Scandinavian winters and unpaved forest trails, the Cross Country paired stationwagon comfort and space with a rugged image created by bold protective lower body cladding. The extra ground clearance allowed drivers to venture off-road and through deep mud without damaging delicate bodywork.

Pioneer of the ‘Cross’
Volvo may well have been the first automaker to use ‘Cross’ some 10 years before others added a similar concept to their passenger car models with the suffix. Today, many models have a ‘Cross’ version which usually has a more ‘ruggedised’ appearance with some adventure accessories.

The original Cross Country introduced by Volvo Car Malaysia in 2001. Not everyone drove it in muddy rivers but it was capable of doing so if required.
Malaysian motorists first encountered this rugged utility concept in the late 1990s when the V70 Cross Country made its local debut. As with most other Volvos, it was assembled locally in the country’s first vehicle assembly plant in Selangor.

Cross Country concept returns
Almost 3 decades after the original Cross Country was introduced (and then faded away), the concept returns for the electric age with the new EX30 Cross Country. Building on the standard EX30 footprint, this new version uses the same formula as before with functional mechanical revisions designed for light off-roading and all-weather versatility.

The elevated visual presence comes from chassis ground clearance being increased by 19 mm over the standard EX30. Visual elements that identify the Cross Country are low-gloss Vapour Grey skidplates, matte black lower bumpers, unpainted wheelarch extensions, and dark front and rear shields. The signature Cross Country nameplate can be found on the C-pillar and there’s an embossed logo at the rear.

Look longer at the front shield (which would usually be a grille in an ICE model) and you’ll see that it features an intricate graphic engraving. This shows the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range located 150 kms north of the Arctic Circle where Sweden’s highest mountain can be found.

High-performance AWD drivetrain
Unlike the standard EX30 which has 2-wheel drive, the Cross Country has all-wheel drive with electric motors at the front and rear axles. The high-performance drivetrain generates a combined output of 315 kW (428 hp)/543 Nm of torque, enabling the compact SUV to accelerate from rest to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.7 seconds.

Power is supplied by a 69 kWh NMC battery pack mounted low within the chassis floor, providing a lower centre of gravity that helps offset the higher ride height. Recalibrated steering software improves torque build-up, active return, and road dampening when speeding over uneven surfaces.

Up to 437 kms of range is claimed and when it’s time to recharge, the time required to fill from 10% to 80% is said to be 27 minutes. This is the quickest time but only if the DC charger supplies electricity at 175 kW.

The same exercise with a 50 kW DC charger (which would be more common in Malaysia) would take up to 56 minutes. With AC charging at 11 kW, recharging from 0% to 100% should take around 8 hours.

The charging system integrates battery pre-conditioning via the built-in Google Maps navigation app, which automatically adjusts the battery pack to its optimal thermal temperature en route to a chosen rapid charger to maximize intake speeds.

Functional and minimalist
Within the EX30 Cross Country, the cabin continues Volvo’s minimalist design language while introducing clever, functional storage solutions. By removing traditional door speakers and integrating audio delivery into a single full-width Harman Kardon Premium soundbar along the base of the dashboard, the designers created exceptionally deep storage pockets within the doors.

A central tunnel compartment slides forward to offer cupholders or retracts to store larger items, complemented by a floor-level storage area situated between the front footwells and a glove compartment relocated directly beneath the central touchscreen for easier access by both front occupants. Rear passengers benefit from a sliding central storage box that can be removed entirely for cleaning, doubling as a rubbish bin.

Cargo volume in the 4233 mm long/1850 mm wide body is similar to the standard EX30 with 318 litres of usable volume, expandable to 718 litres when the divided rear backrests are folded flat.

A ‘Will It Fit?’ visual graphic is printed directly on the inner tailgate lining, providing quick guidance for loading bulkier equipment like camping gear or flat-pack furniture from IKEA.

Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch central touchscreen running native Google Services, a panoramic glass roof, wireless smartphone integration.

Safe Space Technology
The brand’s Safe Space Technology suite uses 5 radars, forward-looking camera and ultrasonic sensors to constantly scan all around the car. Active systems to help the driver be aware of hazardous situations and to avoid them (autonomously if necessary) include Park Pilot Assist that identifies available parking spaces and manages steering, acceleration, and braking to park without driver involvement.

The Blind Spot warning system, which Volvo was the first to introduce 20 years ago, helps to make the driver aware of motorcyclists or cyclists approaching from the rear side but are not visible in the mirror. The same system is also used to alert occupants when opening doors and there is a cyclist approaching from behind.

It’s worth noting that many of the active safety systems like automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning go back some 20 years, and Volvo was the first to introduce them. Today, they are common on almost all of the latest models and ASEAN NCAP also encourages having blind spot warning as standard (if it is not present, the model will not qualify for the maximum overall star rating even if it does well in other areas).

There’s also a range of Volvo accessories for this model such as a Load Carrier, Roof Basket, Inside Sunshade, and All-Weather Mats for the cabin floor and boot. Also available is a dashcam for RM2,848 and a digital rearview mirror that provides 3x the visibility of a conventional reflective mirror.

The EX30 is priced from RM218,648 in Peninsular Malaysia (without insurance), and the first 100 owners will get it for RM12,000 less as well as receive a complimentary Volvo Wallbox worth RM3,990 and accessories worth RM5,778.
