Summer is Heating Up: Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report (First Week of June)
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to book that Mexican angling getaway, the wait is officially over. The first week of June in Puerto Vallarta is absolute magic on the water.
We are officially transitioning into the summer big-game season, meaning the water temperatures are climbing, the bait is moving, and the ocean is absolutely teeming with life. Whether you’re looking to venture past the arches for some beautiful, acrobatic Mahi-Mahi or stay inside the sheltered waters for some of the most action-packed bay fishing of the year, Banderas Bay is putting on a clinic right now.
Here is exactly what’s biting and what you missed out on if you weren’t on the water this week!
The Main Event: Gold on the Horizon (Mahi-Mahi)
Locally known as Dorado, these neon-green and gold speedsters are making a spectacular showing early this month. While Mahi-Mahi can be caught year-round in PV, June marks the beginning of their peak abundance as the Pacific warms up.
This week, the ticket to success was finding the "trash lines." Early June brings the first tropical evening rains, which wash logs, brush, and river debris out into the bay. Where that freshwater runoff meets the deep sapphire blue of the ocean, a distinct current line forms.
Pro Tip: Mahi-Mahi love structure. Slow-trolling live bait or casting small, bright lures right along these debris lines has resulted in multiple double-hookups this week.
The fish we brought to the boat this week weren't just juveniles either; we ran into some beautiful, hard-fighting bull Dorados that gave our anglers a serious workout before finally heading to the ice chest.
In the Bay: Excellent Action Closer to Shore
You don't need to steam 30 miles offshore to La Corbeteña or El Banco to get your drag screamed loose. The inshore and mid-bay fishing inside Banderas Bay has been nothing short of excellent.
