Volvo and Uber have formed a $300-million partnership in which the Swedish automaker will supply fully autonomous vehicles to Uber for use by the ride-sharing service by 2021.

Volvo will also supply modified XC90 SUVs for use in Pittsburgh later this month, reports Bloomberg. Uber will allow customers summon the self-driving cars from their mobile phones.

The joint project will focus on the development of new base vehicles using the latest autonomous driving technologies, including driverless cars, Volvo announced. Volvo Cars will manufacture the base vehicles for purchase by Uber. Volvo and Uber are contributing a combined $300 million to the project.

“Both Uber and Volvo will use the same base vehicle for the next stage of their own autonomous car strategies,” according to a Volvo statement. “This will involve Uber adding its own self-developed autonomous driving systems to the Volvo base vehicle. Volvo will use the same base vehicle for the next stage of its own autonomous car strategy, which will involve fully autonomous driving.”

The new base vehicle will be developed on Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), currently used on Volvo’s XC90, S90, and V90.

Volvo Cars and Uber engineers will work closely together on project development, extending the scalability of the SPA platform to include all needed safety, redundancy, and new features required for autonomous vehicles, according to Volvo.

In related news, Uber announced it has acquired Otto, a driverless-truck startup founded earlier this year.

Daimler Announces Cuts at North Carolina Truck Plant

Daimler Trucks North America plans to lay off more than 900 people at its Freightliner plant in North Carolina, according to published reports, an action expected to be temporary as the company adjusts to expectations of a softer year for truck sales.

The company is cutting production at its Cleveland Truck Manufacturing plant by a third “in anticipation of a softer North American truck market in 2016, which will be somewhat below the very strong market of 2015,” spokesman David Giroux said in a statement, as reported by the Charlotte Observer.

The move is a response to a “sustained reduction in orders and a diminished build rate and is considered temporary.” The plant makes heavy-duty Freightliner and Western Star trucks.

The news follows last month’s announcements that Volvo Trucks was laying off employees at its assembly and powertrain plants.

Class 8 inventories hit an all-time record high last fall, pointing to a cooling off of the market, according to FTR Associates, industry analysts and forecasters.

Demand was boosted by record fourth-quarter orders in 2014. "This resulted in tremendous order backlogs and as a result, OEMs greatly increasing production rates in 2015,” explained FTR’s Jonathan Starks. “Unfortunately, retail sales got off to a slow start and never really got caught up with the number of trucks being built.”

Retail sales are not expected to be strong in the first quarter of 2016, Starks said, leading to the cuts in production.

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will offer a 40-percent improvement in electric-mode driving with a 53-mile range powered by the vehicle's second-generation Voltec extended-range electric propulsion system.

The Volt achieves this range improvement by running on a full charge of electricity stored in its new 18.4 killowatt-per-hour lithium-ion battery that's rated at a combined 106 MPGe gasoline equivalent.

Once the vehicle's battery runs low, a gas-powered generator operates to extend the driving range for a total of 420 miles on a full tank.

Chevrolet expects many next-generation Volt owners to use power solely from their batteries for more than 90 percent of trips. Currently, Volt owners use battery power on 80 percent of their trips, according to GM.

The average Volt owner can expect to travel more than 1,000 miles between gas refills, if they charge the vehicle regularly.

The next-generation Volt's new 1.5-liter gasoline engine acts as a range-extender and offers a combined EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 42 mpg.

Tesla Motors plans to reveal its Model 3 in March of 2016, and the battery-electric vehicle line could reach a driving range of up to 300 miles, according to a report from Autocar.

The company plans to offer at least two affordable models in its Model 3 line, including a sedan and compact utility, Tesla's chief technical officer has announced.

The Model 3 will go on sale in middle of 2017, according to the Autocar report. Vehicles in the Model 3 lineup should retail for about $35,000.

Caterpillar Inc. announced Tuesday that it will begin independently designing and manufacturing its Cat vocational truck family at its plant in Victoria, Texas. Production is to begin next year.

The split was confirmed by Navistar Inc., which has been building the Cat Truck products, which are based on the International PayStar vocational truck, since 2011 at its plant in Escobedo, Mexico. Navistar said it will introduce its own line of premium vocational trucks in 2016.

"The on-highway vocational truck product family is important to our product line," said Chris Chadwick, Caterpillar's director of the Global On-Highway Truck Group. "Customers like our trucks and want to include them in their fleets in a variety of heavy-duty applications such as dump trucks, mixers, haulers or one of the other configurations we offer.

"To continue to provide the best solution for our customers, we will bring the design and manufacturing of this product into Caterpillar, and the production specifically to Victoria. Our updated strategy reaffirms our commitment to grow and develop our presence in the vocational truck industry moving forward."

Caterpillar launched its first vocational truck, the CT660, in the North American market in 2011. Two more models have since been added, the CT681 in fall of 2014 and the CT680 several months ago. Glider-kit versions of the CT660 are also offered. To date, Caterpillar has worked with Navistar for the products' designing and production.

"We appreciate the collaboration we have had with Navistar," Chadwick said. "As we look to future launches of new truck models, this updated strategy will better position us to help provide our customers with the best products and services for this market. Caterpillar continues to drive the design phase of all models, both current and planned.

“Before launching the product, we spent hundreds of hours on the road with customers, asking them to describe the ideal truck. We know what they want and need - from functionality of the truck itself to comfort in the cab. We plan to meet and exceed those expectations as we grow this product offering to fulfill our customers' needs."

The transition process will begin immediately, with production expected to begin in the first half of next year, the Cat announcement said. Caterpillar Victoria will continue to produce excavators, and the addition of vocational truck production is expected to add about 200 new jobs at the facility.

The plant opened in 2012 and now produces Cat hydraulic excavators. Victoria is near the Texas Gulf Coast, north of Corpus Christi.

Caterpillar dealers will continue to sell and support the existing line of Cat vocational trucks, the announcement said.

Navistar said it is “leveraging shared technology and intellectual property from its venture with Caterpillar,” and “will transition to Caterpillar the production and engineering of the Cat-branded severe service trucks the company has been supplying to Caterpillar since 2011,” its announcement said.

Navistar will continue to manufacture trucks for Caterpillar through the end of 2016.

Both companies can leverage certain joint intellectual property, collaborate with suppliers and use licensing agreements as they move ahead, Navistar said.

"Navistar and Caterpillar have had a strong, collaborative working relationship through a number of projects and partnerships for many, many years," said Bill Kozek, president, Navistar Truck and Parts. "This next phase provides Navistar with an exciting opportunity to introduce new technologies and product features into our new line of premium vocational trucks that we'll launch in 2016."

The company said it will provide additional details on its new premium vocational trucks in the months ahead.
