Tire blowouts are sudden, explosive air losses usually caused by underinflation, which creates excessive heat and weakens the tire, or by road hazards like potholes, nails, or curbs that puncture or damage the structure. Other factors include overloading, aging/wear and tear, high speeds, manufacturing defects, and even extreme heat, all compromising the tire's integrity and leading to rapid failure, especially at highway speeds.
Common Causes:
Underinflation: The most common cause; low pressure makes sidewalls flex, generate extreme heat, and break down internal materials.
Road Hazards: Hitting potholes, curbs, debris, or sharp objects (nails, glass) can create cuts or impacts that weaken the tire.
Overloading: Exceeding your vehicle's weight limit puts immense strain on tires, causing bulging and heat buildup.
Excessive Heat: High speeds, heavy loads, and hot weather increase internal tire temperature, which weakens the structure.
Tire Wear & Age: Bald or old tires, with compromised tread and weakened sidewalls, are much more vulnerable to failure.
Punctures: Small punctures, like a slow leak from a nail, can lead to underinflation and eventual blowout if not repaired.
Contributing Factors:
Improper Maintenance: Lack of rotations, alignments, or balance can accelerate wear.
Manufacturing Defects: Rarely, flaws in tire construction can lead to sudden failure.
Speeding: High speeds amplify all other issues, especially heat and stress.
