Some yacht designs are more than successful. They become benchmarks for an entire category of boats.
The Grand Banks 42 is one of them.
Designed by Ken Smith and first introduced in the mid-1960s, the 42 became one of the most recognisable and successful trawler yacht designs ever produced. With its purposeful profile, semi-displacement hull, deep keel and practical layout, it was designed around a simple idea: comfortable, capable cruising over long distances.
Over the decades, the concept evolved. The original wooden construction gave way to GRP, while refinements to the hull and interior improved comfort and space without losing the character that made the design so distinctive.
The range eventually expanded beyond the original Classic, with the Europa (open aft cockpit) and Motoryacht versions offering different interpretations of the same proven cruising philosophy.
The Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht took the concept a step further. Its extended aft cabin created more spacious owner's accommodation and a large usable aft deck, making it an appealing choice for those who valued time aboard as much as the journey itself.
Production continued into the early 2000s, and the enduring appeal of the 42 says much about the strength of the original design. Trends come and go; a well-conceived yacht can remain relevant for generations.
The Grand Banks Yachts 42 MY featured in this film is Lady A, a wonderful 2000 example currently offered for sale by us.
