Baa-baa boys and girls! Today’s story will be about a car which wasn’t from any sort special when it rolled out from factory, but in present this vehicle does turn many people’s necks while passing by for sure!
Meet Aivars Alberts Prokopovičs 1989 VW mk1 Caddy! There’s not much special to say about how well equiped the car was when it came new, because in those days comercial use cars were simple to a bare minimum if we compare a similar purpose car from nowadays. 1.6 petrol powered engine with 4-speed manual transmission and a huge fiberglass roof on the cargo section, wich has been “lost” untill the car got into Aivars hands, that’s it!
Aivars visited us shortly after he purchased the car. The overall state of it was quite good considering that these cars were not taken care of quite frequently in their lifetime, and the first sign showing it, is how straight the cargo bed ribs are, which on this particular car looked pretty mint comparing on how bad they look now on other mk1 Caddys what we’ve seen. He decided to refurbish all the chasis parts and lower the suspension for a better aesthetic look. The main reason of lowering the car was because it was sitting unevenly with rear end higher than front.
All chasis parts were dismantled, sandblasted, powdercoated, front and rear brakes refurbished on the best manner possible. Everything was assembled together with fresh bushes, ball joints and tie rods with ends. New Rota OSR 15’x7 wheels were wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1-R 185/55 R15 tyres. New coilover suspension has been sourced, installed and adjusted at the desired height to get the best look on this new wheel setup.
The good old 1.6 engine has served this cars life like a champ. Even Aivars has been driven for 2 seasons now with few minor issues, and it is begging for some love. But he has some different plans on his mind for the nearest future and there will be a day when the little old lump will leave this cars engine bay and something more advanced and efficient will take it’s place for sure.
